Audition Information

In order to complete your acceptance into the CWU Department of Music program, you must audition for the music faculty. This gives us an opportunity to hear the level you have achieved in your musical skills and it gives you the opportunity to discuss your development with collegiate instructors.

For your audition, we recommend the following:

1. Select music which best displays your performance level.

2. We strongly recommend you prepare your audition material under the supervision of your private teacher and/or music director.

FOR INSTRUMENTAL AUDITIONS:

Requirement:

A scale, 2 octaves, and an etude or a recital piece.

For Jazz Improvisation:

Two charts in contrasting styles (Blues in F or Bb, a jazz standard from the "realbook", etc). A taped accompaniment or Aebersold play along disc is acceptable and encouraged for a Jazz Improvisation audition.

Accompanist available upon request for a $15.00 fee;

Music and fee are to be sent to the Department of Music two (2) weeks prior to your audition date. Please make checks payable to CWU Foundation. These must be paid separately from any housing arrangements.

To make an appointment for an audition:

Audition times must be arranged directly with Mr. Bill Beam, head of the tuba/euphonium area. He can be reached by calling the Dept. of Music at 509-963-1216. Auditions should be scheduled during our annual Open House, in February. For accommodation at another time, please contact Mr. Beam.

ALL ADMISSIONS TO THE DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC PROGRAMS/DEGREES and ALL SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS ARE DETERMINED BY AUDITION.

Admission to CWU: Admission to the Department of Music as a major does not automatically admit you as a student at Central. You must contact the Admissions office to apply for Admission to CWU. You will receive notification directly from tem indicating your admission status. Applications will be taken on a first-com first-serve basis until the enrollment maximum has been met. Central is already filling up fast and priority will be given to those students who apply and make their pre-payment fee early.
