Admission Audition Requirements
For New Trombone Students

In order to complete your acceptance into the CWU Department of Music program, you must audition for the music faculty. This gives us an opportunity to hear the level you have achieved in your musical skills and it gives you the opportunity to discuss your development with collegiate instructors.

For Trombone Students Pursuing a Performance Degree
If you would like to audition for admission to the BM in Performance, we recommend preparing and performing a solo that best demonstrates your current skills.  It is desirable to choose a piece that is competitive at the district or (preferably) state contest level, emphasizing both musical and technical capabilities. Though there are many pieces that are technically and musically more difficult than the list below, we suggest only that you choose carefully so as to present what you do well, not what you have yet to learn. If you have any questions about audition repertoire, please email Dr. Mark Babbitt or phone 509-963-1248.

  • Guilmant Morceau Symphonique
  • Hindemith Sonata (mvt.1)
  • Jacob Concerto (mvt.1)
  • Borodgni/Rochut Melodius Etudes
  • Blazhevich Clef Studies

Requirements:

  1. A solo that demonstrates the student's highest level of technical and musical achievement.
  2. Improvisation on a standars tune.

Admission audition times must be arranged directly with Professor Babbitt, head of trombone studies. He can be reached by calling the Dept. of Music at 509-963-1216. Auditions should be scheduled during our annual Open House, in April. For accommodation at another time, please contact Professor Babbitt.

Jazz Improvisation auditions require two charts in contrasting styles (Blues in F or Bb, a jazz standard from the "realbook", etc). A taped accompaniment or Aebersold play along disc is acceptable and encouraged for a Jazz Improvisation audition.

Large Ensemble Audition Requirements
