CWU Music Convocation/Studio Class and
Recital Attendance Policies

PDF Printable version - 48 Kb

  1. All students enrolled in applied music (MUS X64, X71) must attend a minimum of seven recital/concerts each quarter, and all Music Convocations (a.k.a. "Convo" or "Recital Hour") and Studio Classes.  The purpose of requiring attendance at concerts is to enrich students’ listening experiences: to develop acquaintance with repertoire, genres and styles, and encourage a habit of attending concerts.
  2. Convocation/Recital attendance is recorded by monitors who will scan your CWU Connection Card as you leave at the end of the event.  This information will be kept in a database in the music office.
  3. Students who arrive late for performances or Convo/Recital Hour may not be given attendance credit, at the discretion of the Building Monitor on duty.  Students who leave performances early will not be given attendance credit.  Any problems that arise in connection with this will be brought to the Convo Coordinator for resolution.
  4. Failure to attend all Convocations and the required number of recitals/concerts will result in an Incomplete grade for Applied Lessons.  This will be changed to the grade the instructor has assigned when make-up assignments have been completed, determined in consultation with the Convo Coordinator.  Examples of such assignments include attendance at additional concerts, written reports or reviews, or music library listening assignments, commensurate with the number of misses shown in the database.
  5. Lost Connection cards should be replaced immediately.

Music Convocation/Studio Class

  1. Music Convocations and Studio Classes are scheduled in alternate weeks at 2:00-2:50 PM every Thursday while school is in session during the regular academic year.   This schedule of Convocations and Studio Classes will be posted at the beginning of each quarter.  Convocations are held in the Concert Hall; consult your instructor for the location of your Studio Class. Additional Convocations might be added at other times, if student demand is high.
  2. No other Music Department class or rehearsal may be scheduled at the Thursday 2 PM time, unless one-time permission is granted by the chair.

  3. Studio Classes may be scheduled at other times, but only if they do not conflict with students' regularly scheduled classes.  These must be scheduled with Music Office staff.
  4. Attendance at Convocations and recitals is monitored by the Music Office; attendance at Studio Classes is monitored by the Applied/Studio instructor.
  5. It is generally understood in the Music Department that students must make every effort to avoid schedule conflicts with Convocation.  Excused absences from Convocation because of a schedule conflict must be arranged with the Convo Coordinator. To be excused, write a letter to the Convo Coordinator explaining what the conflict is and how/why it has come about.
    1. If work-related, please describe your class and work schedules fully, and/or include a letter from your employer demonstrating that you have no choice in the matter of your work schedule at that time.
    2. If class-related, please provide course information regarding the course as a requirement for your degree and how/why the schedule conflict is unavoidable.
  6. Being excused from Convocation does not automatically excuse the student from Studio Classes that meet at the same time on alternate weeks.  Arrangements must be made directly with the Applied/Studio teacher to make up work for Studio Class.

Recital Attendance Policies

  1. Normally, attending a recital results in a scan worth one recital.  If a concert lasts more than two (2) hours, the scan will be weighted to be equivalent to two recitals.  This will be done in the music office.
  2. Students may receive recital attendance credit in exchange for their help with specific campus events, e.g., assisting with State Solo Contest.  These events will be announced in Recital Hour in advance, with terms as approved in advance by the Convo Coordinator.  Clubs or sponsoring organizations wanting to offer recital attendance as incentive for participation must have permission in advance before offering any such incentive.
  3. When a student performs in a concert, attendance is not usually credited. Exceptions will be at the Building Monitors’ discretion in consultation with the Convo Coordinator.
    1. When the student is a member of a performing ensemble that is only one of several ensembles performing on a concert where each performs for a significant period of time (e.g., 45 minutes).  This includes combined large ensemble, small ensemble, and composition recitals.  It is required that the student will attend all of the rest of the concert, whether before or after his/her performance.
    2. When a student performs one or two pieces on a studio recital, and attends the rest of the program in the concert hall.
    3. Credit may not be received if a student in an ensemble has not listened to the concert for a reasonable amount of time in the concert hall, performed for more than 1/3 of the program, stayed backstage during the performance, or spent most of the concert warming up.

  4. Any disagreements regarding these policies or attendance at any recital or concert, may be referred to the Convo Coordinator for resolution.
