Music Department Chair / Professor
The Department of Music at Central Washington University (CWU) seeks an experienced, flexible, creative, and dynamic leader to enhance its reputation for excellence. In addition to having a management style that is open and inclusive, the successful candidate must be: an inspiring, visionary leader able to motivate, a passionate advocate for quality teaching, artistic excellence, and academic achievement, an outstanding communicator with strong interpersonal skills, and a force for cohesion able to sustain the collegial relationships that characterize CWU’s Department of Music.

The position will be at the Full Professor rank and will involve an 11-month contract, with the expectation of teaching at least one course per year, engaging in some artistic or scholarly activity, and performing Department Chair and other university and/or professional service. Working collaboratively with Department faculty and staff, seven other Department Chairs, and the Dean of the College of Arts and Humanities, the Music Department Chair provides administrative leadership encompassing the following major responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership in the planning, delivery, assessment, accreditation, improvement, and development of the academic curriculum in the disciplines housed in the department
  • Administer evaluations, workloads, annual activity reports, and other department personnel matters.
  • Recruit, supervise and evaluate faculty and support staff.
  • Apply academic policy and respond to student needs; participate in student recruitment and retention.
  • Coordinate department development, review, and revision of the department strategic plan; prepare the department budget request; and monitor departmental budget expenditures.
  • Oversee the use and maintenance of department facilities and equipment.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with units and individuals external to the department.
  • Assist with donor cultivation, fundraising, and promotion of the Department

Qualifications:
Minimum:

  • Masters in Music, with significant appropriate professional experience
  • At least 5 years of university-level teaching experience
  • Academic record that merits a tenured appointment as a Full Professor
  • Demonstrated administrative experience
  • Excellent organizational, people and communication skills
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule that often includes evenings and weekends

Preferred:

  • Doctorate in Music
  • Experience in personnel and budgetary management
  • Demonstrated success in fundraising and donor cultivation
  • Experience working with diverse faculty and student communities
  • Success in marketing and promoting university programs
  • Experience with accreditation, curriculum development, and interdisciplinary programming
  • Demonstrated ability to foster a collaborative atmosphere and inspire trust among faculty, staff, and students

The Department of Music is a supportive and innovative community, with a strong regional/national reputation in music education, and a growing reputation for outstanding student ensembles that are regularly invited to perform at prestigious regional and national venues. Committed to teaching as a performing art, its 21 full-time and 13 part-time faculty excel as performers, composers and scholars. They currently teach and mentor 270 undergraduate and 15 graduate students in a new, state-of-the-art music facility that is renown in the Pacific Northwest. Together with the 7 other departments and 4 interdisciplinary programs that comprise CWU’s College of Arts and Humanities, the Department of Music provides a vibrant cultural life for the campus and regional communities.
