Dr. Nikolas Caoile

Director of Orchestras

Dr. Nikolas Caoile is Director of Orchestras at Central Washington University. There, he has grown the orchestras into one of the preeminent collegiate orchestra programs of the Northwest. The CWU Symphony Orchestra has consistently won invitations to perform at the Washington Music Educators Association Conferences. A passionate believer in music education for all ages, Caoile has conducted numerous educational and community engagement concerts. This fall, he will be a featured presenter for the Seattle Symphony’s Talk Music series. Caoile is also a popular guest conductor and clinician with youth orchestras, collegiate ensembles, and high school honor orchestras. In 2010, Caoile will direct the Alaska All-State Orchestra. Also an accomplished pianist, Caoile is a frequent recitalist performing throughout Washington State and the Northwest. He has performed with the Third Angle New Music Ensemble. In October 2009, Caoile will make his New York City debut with the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Americas in collaboration with the Morphoses Dance Company. He is a faculty member of the Kairos Chamber Music Lyceum.

Caoile has appeared with several professional, youth, and collegiate orchestras. He has guest conducted the Gig Harbor Symphony, Olympia Symphony Orchestra, and Salem Chamber Orchestra. In March 2010, Caoile will conduct a program with the Yakima Symphony Orchestra as a finalist for its Music Directorship. Caoile has conducted internationally at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, and at Provence-Aubagne in France. He has also competed at the Vahktang Jordania Competition and the 9th Cadaqués Conducting Competition. His principal teachers include: Kenneth Kiesler, Gustav Meier, Peter Erös, Larry Rachleff and Daniel Lewis.

Caoile also thrives in the opera repertoire. He has served on the music staff of the Aspen Opera Theater Center as a Coach Accompanist Fellow preparing many operas including: Rigoletto, The Cunning Little Vixen, Die Entführung auf dem Serail, The Turn of the Screw, and Giasone. He has served as an accompanist with the Seattle Opera assisting in productions of Eugene Onegin and Norma and has worked with the Seattle Opera Young Artists on productions of Gianni schicchi and Eugene Onegin, He was a coach pianist and chorus master for the Bel Canto Vocal Institute in Portland, Oregon where he prepared L’elisir d’amore and Fidelio. He was harpsichordist in performances of L’incoronazione di Poppea, Giasone, and Calisto. Caoile has also served as conductor many main-stage productions. He has led performances of Così fan Tutte, Il Matrimonio Segretto, Gianni Schicchi, The Bartered Bride, and Dido and Aeneas. He assisted Martin Katz in the University of Michigan production of Hänsel and Gretel. Dr. Caoile also led the premiere of Nancy van de Vate’s Where the Cross is Made. In 2005, Caoile was chosen to be Assistant Conductor with the Florida Grand Opera. His teachers include Martin Katz, Phil Kelsey, David McDade, and Kenneth Merrill.
