Lesson Plan
Subject/Unit/Lesson: Science/The Human Body/The Bone Known
Grade Level: 2nd grade
Lesson Objectives:
1. Students will learn the names of the bones in many parts of the human body.
2. Students will learn the importance of the skeleton and how it protects important organs in our body.
3. Students will learn that healthy bones can become fully-grown and strong.
4. Students will learn to put a skeleton together to create a full human body.
Materials Needed:
Start the lesson by asking the class questions about the bones. What builds strong bones? –Milk. Can anyone tell me what Popeye the Sailor Man eats? –Spinach. What other foods help build strong bones? –Yogurt, cheese, fruits, vegetables. Have students answer the questions out loud to start a class discussion.
Procedures:
1. Discussion of bone questions.
2. Use a PowerPoint presentation to show students pictures of the skeleton and the bones. Have the bones that they need to know labeled. Also, explain how the skeletal parts protect important organs in our body. Have a model skeleton near by so that students can physically touch the bones you are talking about.
3. Have students go onto the computer and visit http://www.kidsknowit.com/. At that site click on Our Human Biology Website, click on the bones tab, and have students read the information and look at the pictures.
4. Have a discussion with students about what they read and the pictures they discovered.
5. Once students understand what they just read have the students visit http://www.brainpopjr.com/games/. Click on the Bones Game and give students time to complete the diagram by putting together a picture of a skeleton.
6. Explain how to and then make paper skeletons with clasps, glue, scissors, and skeleton pieces.
7. Play Simon Says with bone parts and then have students share what they learned from the experience.
Evaluation/Assessment:
The teacher will check for student understanding while playing Simon Says, making sure that students touch the right bone or part of the body when told to do so. During the class discussions the teacher will also make a mental note of who is engaged in sharing what they learned and understands the names of the various bones.
