General Information

Central Washington University offers a number of assistantships during the academic year to beginning and continuing graduate students.

Graduate assistantships are available in each of CWU's graduate program departments. Nearly two-thirds of the University's graduate assistants teach; the remainder serve as research assistants with a few performing University service functions.

Graduate assistants are normally selected during the months of March and April for the subsequent academic year. For full consideration, applications should be filed before March 1. Later applications will be given consideration if positions become available. Award announcements are not made until sometime after April 15.

Academic Year Graduate Assistantships

The graduate assistant package for the 2007-2008 academic year is valued at $15,685 for in-state and $23,875 for out-of state. The stipend is $8,100 or $2,700 per quarter, Insurance is $778, health center fees $180 and tuition is $6,627 for in-state and $14,817 for out-of state or $2,209 per quarter in-state and $4,939 for out of state. Graduate School pays each assistant's academic year medical insurance fee of $778 and health center fee of $180. In some cases, but not all, non-resident graduate student assistants are assessed state resident tuition and their fee waivers are applied against this amount.

Summer Session Graduate Assistantships

A very limited number of graduate assistantships are available during the summer term.

Financial Aid

Financial aid is also available through the university from federal and state funds for students demonstrating financial need. Applications should be made directly to the University Financial Aid Office by March 1. Employment both on and off campus is available. Travel and Research funds are available to Graduate Students on a competitive basis.
