Investigating the
Wenas Creek Mammoth
2006 Summer Field School • June 19 - August 11

The First Field Season (Summer 2005): During the first field season, we recovered hundreds of bone fragments, including two near-complete, three-foot-long humeri (upper arm bones) from a mammoth near Selah, Washington. These are probably from a Columbian Mammoth more than 11,000 years old.

The Second Field Season (Summer 2006): In this second field season, we will recover more of the mammoth and determine its geological context, using techniques from paleontology, archaeology and geography. We will focus on excavation, mapping, laboratory techniques, paleontology, stratigraphy, geomorphology, skeletal anatomy and developing an understanding of the area in the late Pleistocene.
