Course Description:

This course will assist students in utilizing computerized sources of information, methods of instruction, understand technology applied to training, and better use computers for resources for health information.

 

Student Learning Outcomes/Assessments

As a result of successful participation in this course, students will be able to:

  1. select valid sources of information about health needs and information/prepare a written report utilizing valid sources.
  2. utilize computerized sources of health-related information/prepare a written report using only computerized sources
  3. utilize instructional equipment and other instructional media/use media available to present various programs to the class
  4. utilize computerized health information retrieval systems effectively/prepare a written report.
  5. match information need with appropriate retrieval system/ exam
  6. access principle on-line and other database health information resources/exam

 

Assessment Strategies:

Student learning will be assessed in the following ways:

  1. Mixed Program Report.  Students will prepare a written report on a health topic of their choice.  The report will use electronic sources only, and will be evaluated on use of technology as well as strength of sources cited.  50 points, details will be given in class.
  2. Program Review.  Students will evaluate available programs in a health area.  Written review on reliability/validity and usability.  50 points, details will be given in class.
  3. PPT Presentation.  Students will use the media available in the classroom to present a topic of their choice.  Must demonstrate ease of use of technology, as well as reliable, valid sources.  50 points, details will be given in class.
  4. Web page project:  Students will begin the process of using web page software to develop their own electronic portfolio for class.  This will be presented to the class at the end of the course. 50 points, details to be given in class.
  5. Finals exam:  One final exam will be given; application based.  100 points.

 

Grading Scale:

A         95-100 percent of total points possible

A-        90-94 percent of total points possible

B+       87-89 percent of total points possible

B          84-86 percent of total points possible

B-        80-83 percent of total points possible

C+       77-79 percent of total points possible

C         74-76 percent of total points possible

C-        70-73 percent of total points possible

D+       67-69 percent of total points possible

D         64-66 percent of total points possible

D-        60-63 percent of total points possible

Attendance:

 

Please note the attendance policy. It has a direct effect on your grade in this class. Attendance is mandatory. Role will be checked each day. It is your responsibility to check with the instructor periodically and monitor your attendance.  In addition, it is an expectation of this instructor that you not only attend class but that you are on time to class and that you are prepared for the discussion of the day. You are expected to contribute to the overall effectiveness of this class by sharing your thoughts, ideas, beliefs, questions, etc. Ways in which you might accomplish this task are to complete whatever reading assignment has been scheduled for the day and formulate questions, thoughts, etc. and to spend some time reflecting on the discussion of the previous class and your class notes, and to refresh your memory about the previous class.

In addition the CWU Honor Code will be followed with all assignments, reports, and exams for which you are responsible. Any violations of this Code will be subject to a hearing of the Honor Council and their subsequent dispensation of the violation.
