Health : A Guide to Intelligent Decisions,
6th Edition, Times Mirror/Mosby Publishers.
The goal of this course is to increase student awareness and knowledge of a variety of health issues from a consumer's standpoint. This class emphasizes "real world" situations and the application of defensive consumerism. Various topic areas including the health marketplace, health facts and frauds, health services, alternative health care, nutrition, fitness, and consumer protection will be explored.
We will read about each topic and discuss them in class. We will participate in class activities to enhance our learning about each topic. Please do the required reading each week so that you may be able to contribute to the discussions in an informed manner. Be sure all of your assignments are top-quality! (Typed, proofed, college level).
The Philosophy of this course is that learning should be both interesting and rewarding to your college career and life after college. It is my goal to make learning both informative and entertaining. I love humor employ it in the classroom. Please do not assume that this means the coursework will not be taken seriously and that quality will not be expected in your homework and quizzes.
The Classroom environment is one of adult learning and interacting. I teach in a manner which requires the student to be active in class and outside of class. I try to teach fun, "different" classes. Please do not sit back and let learning pass you by. I expect you to contribute to the discussions daily and become a part of the process of learning. You may bring a beverage to my class but eating or tobacco use of any type are not allowed. Please leave a clean classroom. You may relax but sleeping, reading, side-talking, and listening to "Walkmans" are not allowed. Discussion of personal opinions and experiences are encouraged. You may speak freely but please be respectful of others (i.e. no foul language).
The Quizzes at the end of each section will cover: assigned chapters from Consumer Health : A Guide to Intelligent Decisions, any handouts, library reserve reading, lecture/discussion notes, and guest speaker's comments. Note cards are not allowed with quizzes. Quiz score sheets will be posted in the classroom following each quiz. (100 pts.)
The Take-Home Papers will consist of activities, essays, reaction papers, and article reviews. They are to be typed, proofed and college quality, one page only. (1-3 pts)
The Final Exam will cover: all reading to date, all lectures/discussions, speaker's comments. (200)
A Single Study Card may be used during the
final exam. Study cards are 3 x 5 note
cards of each individual student's own design. You may not share cards in or
out of class. Borrowed or copied cards
are not allowed and are considered cheating.
Each card must bear your name in ink.
You may use one note-card with the final exam.
Weekly assignments (if given) and class activities will receive a one, two, or three grade and will be applied to boost your term total.
GRADING POLICIES
Grading: All quizzes, papers, and the Final Exam will be graded on a percentage correct basis. At the end of the quarter all percentages will be averaged and a grade assigned. (Example: 99+98+97+98+195/6=97.8 avg.) Reminder: the final exam score will be doubled, hence, it is worth 200 % pts.

Additional tips and advice To get the most out of this course follow these guidelines:
a) Keep up to date on your assigned reading. Don't get caught looking uniformed!
b) Do your best on the take-home assignments. Most students profit at the end of the term by the extra percentage points attained through the successful completion of the take-homes.
c) You are solely responsible for keeping up with class notes and assignments. Establish a "buddy system" with a classmate so that you may cover for each other in the event of absences.
d) Health education courses can be difficult and challenging. Form a study group with your classmates.
d) If you miss more than one class meeting, contact the Office of Student Affairs and ask them to notify me officially.
e) Get the most out
of your educational experience--participate, don't vegetate!
Sit in the front of the class and become involved. Please express your opinions and experiences
openly. Ask questions!
f) If you would like to review your quiz scores or score sheets, please make an appointment with me.
