Mission Statement

The purpose of this class is to expose the student to the concepts of total person health. The main goal of this course is to increase the student's understanding and awareness of health behavior and to better enable them to make positive lifestyle choices. Particular emphasis will be on the whole person concept of health and wellness. We will explore the five domains of wellness, physical, emotional, intellectual, spiritual, and social health. To attain these goals, the following specific topics will likely be explored: fitness, nutrition, stress management, relationships, sexuality, safety and risk reduction, and environmental health.

The following objectives are intended to act as guidelines and to set minimum parameters for this course. Course Structure and Environment

This course will combine lecture/discussion with readings, guest speakers, visitations, and classroom/outside activities and discussions. I try to keep the mood light and the work serious. In that light, become involved, keep up on the reading, do your best in the class and personal development projects, enjoy the quarter and get the most out of the course! Please be on time to class, be active, & work hard. Feel free to speak out in class but please be respectful of others. You may sit anywhere you like, bring a beverage, but tobacco use of any type is not allowed.

Some activities may require "gym clothes" or casual, loose fitting clothing. You will be notified if special clothes are necessary.

Course Requirements and Evaluation

Letter grading will be based on the student's attained average percent of points from the following:

1) Lab assignments. We will conduct four hands-on learning experiences designed to enhance your understanding of the lecture component of the course on Fridays. Each lab activity will be turned in for a grade on Monday. (each contributing to 10% of your total grade)

2) Mid-Term and final exam. The exams will be based on all class materials, discussions, activities, and reading to date. Many items will be selected from previous tests. The format will be computer scan (bring a #2 pencil), multiple choice, true or false, and approximately 50 item in length.  Each will contribute to 30% of your total grade

3) Pop Quizzes may be offered. Quizzes are based on 3 items from the most recent lectures. 1-3 pts, and will be used to boost grade if close to a cut-off.

Course Tips

a) "PASS" rule. If you are asked a question which you find too personal to share with the class for whatever reasons, you have the right to say "Pass" and have your privacy preserved. "Passing" does not, however, give you or other class members the right to comment further or editorialize on the circumstances surrounding your "Pass" option.

b) Keep up to date on your assigned reading. Don't get caught looking uniformed!

c) You are solely responsible for keeping up with class notes and assignments. Establish a "buddy system" with a classmate so that you may cover for each other in the event of absences.

d) If you miss more than one class meeting, contact the Student Affairs Office and ask them to notify me officially.

e) Get the most out of your educational experience--participate, don't vegetate! Please express your opinions and experiences openly.

f) Come see me in my office or take me to coffee, for a walk, a bike ride, a visit! I want to get to know each of you individually. Talk to me about your goals, learning styles, feedback on my teaching, how the course is going for you. I appreciate your opinions and comments.
