Living In Green

A WebQuery for 12th Graders

Introduction

Seniors! This WebQuery is for all of you who are planning on attending college, or moving out of their parent's place after high school. I know that this is an exciting time, but have you thought about what you are going to put into your place? Students are going to be responsible to design a college dorm/future room that is considered to be Green Friendly. You may want to know what green friendly is? If you look at the websites provided under resources, you can find a complete definition and examples of what it is. The purpose of this project is to help students work together, so this will be a two person project. It will be great preparation for when all of you are getting ready to head off to your future college. It will also help the students who are not planning on going to college, because they will get to see how they can benefit the environment while living in their own place. This goes with the On Your Own class.

Task

Each student will have to find one partner with similiar goals. Such as, two girls that are planning on going to college. PLEASE do not pair up with an opposite gender! Students who are planning on working after college, but want to move out on their own can be partners. Each pair will have to come up with a room that will be considered green friendly. In order to do this project, students are going to have to do a little research on what green friendly really is. So that is why there will be a 3 to 4 page paper, and an oral presentation due at the end of this project. Students will have to provide a visual to go along with their oral presentation. The visual will have to be on something that has been recycled, such as a used shoe box. The presentation is mainly for the visual, I want the other students to be able to see what other groups came up with for green friendly decorations/furnishing for their rooms. If you are not using a Power Point, I would like you to try and use as many recycled things as you can. Just use your own creativity for the visual. The goal is to know how to decorate and make your rooms more green friendly. This will be a two week project, so please use your time responsibly.

The task could be a:

dorm room setting
a future apartment (but pick one room, such as, the living room)
your room right now (only if you plan on living with your parents after high school.)
with a partner that is of the same gender!
You may use a Power Point for Visual (if not a Power Point, please use recycled things such as shoe boxes)
Senior Project (You just have to be creative and maybe help make a room in the school to be Green Friendly:)

The Process

Here are a couple things I want you to take into consideration while preparing your rooms.

What is green friendly?
what can we do to help our families be more aware of what green friendly means?
Is it harder to work with two people, while trying to be green friendly?
is it more expensive to live like this?
Is your room still considered stylish, compared to your room at home?
Where can you find information on how to become green friendly?
Will you try and really do this in real life?
How can you inform more people about how to life green friendly?
Did you ever think you would have to consider the environment while trying to decorate your future home/rooms?
How did your partner do while working with them?
Can you take some stuff from home and use them in this project, such as your lighting system?
What will you need to create on your own to complete the task?
Do you have enough knowledge to complete the task?
If not, where can you find help?
Where did you get your recycled visual, if you are not using a Power Point?
Have you checked the rubric and task to make sure that you have completed all aspects of the project?

Evaluation

Presentation Rubric

Category	1	2	3
Comprehension	Student is able to accurately answer almost all questions posed by classmates about the topic.	Student is able to accurately answer most questions posed by classmates about the topic.	Student is unable to accurately answer questions posed by classmates about the topic.
Enthusiasm	Facial expressions and body language generate a strong interest and enthusiasm about the topic in others.	Facial expressions and body language are used to try to generate enthusiasm, but seem somewhat faked.	Very little use of facial expressions or body language. Did not generate much interest in topic being presented.
Knowledge of Topic	Student knows everything about their project and can explain everything very clearly to the class.	Student struggles to talk about their project and seems to not know be able to clearly present it to their class.	Student is just babbling and does not know anything about their project.
Visual	Visual is nicely put together and IS recycled material, or it is a Power Point and does not need to be recycled.	Visual is kind of sloppy, but still is recycled or a Power Point.	Visual is nothing that I wanted, and student needs to do over!

Essay Rubric

Category	1	2	3
Resources	Students used only one of my resources and did a great job on getting their own resources.	Students used two of mine and did okay on finding their own resources.	Students used all of my resources and did not find any on their own.
Grammer	Students did not have any grammatrical corrections.	Students had a few grammatical corrections.	Students did to do this paper over and may use SPELL CHECK!
Length	Students did the required length (3-4 pages).	Students only did two pages.	Students need to reread the requirements please.

Conclusion

Thanks for doing this! I hope that you know more about what it is like to plan and decorate with someone else, and how to be GREEN FRIENDLY. You guys are the new generation, so lets start making a change in our enviorment and our way of living.
