Music 521. Methods of Music Research


Library Assignment

Due Friday October 3

1. Where can you find the following items in the library? Provide the call number and describe the location of the material to the best of your ability by floor number, N, S, E, W orientation, library section ( e.g Library research, reference, etc.) and any other information necessary to pinpoint the location.

A. Books about the history of opera?
B. The Journal of Music Theory?
C. The complete works of William Billings?

2. What is the call number and location of Brother Billy Bronto’s Bygone Blues Band, by David F. Birchman?

3. Where are the masters theses in music located? What is their general LC call number?

4. What is the call number and location of Historical Perspective on the President’s Own Marine Band, by D. Michael Ressler.

5. What is the call number and location of the library’s copy of George Crumb’s Night of the Four Moons and why is it located here?

6. Where are compact discs located? Can they be checked out? For how long?
What about videos/dvds?

7. Who is head of cataloging at the CWU library? Who is their favorite basketball team?

8. What is the best SUBJECT HEADING to use with the library catalog to find:

A. Books about American composers?
B. Books about eighteenth-century music?
C. Scores with parts of sonatas for flute and piano?

9. Does the university subscribe to the Journal of Aesthetic Education? If so, give call number, date of earliest paper (not electronic) issue held in library and where that issue is located.

10. List the electronic databases that are suggested for finding music subject related periodical articles that are directly linked to the library homepage.

11. How many music related periodicals have full text available for some years from the libraries indexes/databases? How many of these have ‘music’ as the first word of its title?

12. Get onto the First Search Database from the library homepage. What is the closest library to Ellensburg that has a copy of Stanley Weiner’s Suite for Bassoon and Piano, op. 36?

13. Get onto the Digital Dissertations Database from the library homepage. What is the title of Dr. Jeffery Snedeker’s doctoral paper, what was the degree received, and from what school and what year was it awarded?

14. What are the advantages of requesting a book through the Summit Catalog as opposed to making an interlibrary loan request?

15. Who were the performers on the CWU faculty concert on January 23, 2002 and what pieces were performed?

16. What are the ways that you can obtain photocopies of microfilm held in our library?

17. What is the call number and location of Songs of Kittitas History by Lillian Mohrs?

18. Choose one musical term and one composer

A. Compare the entries for the TERM in the following sources:
-Blume- Die Musik und Geschichte und Gegenwart
-Sadie, ed.- The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians
-Randel, ed.- The New Harvard Dictionary of Music
-Thomsett- Musical Terms, Symbols and Theory

Compare the sources in terms of the following factors:
1. What is the relative length of the article?
2. What is the depth of coverage?
3. Are there plates, illustrations, tables, graphs, musical examples included?
4. Is there an index to the volume? the series?
5. Is there a bibliography for the article?
6. Is the article signed? By whom?

B. Compare the entries for the COMPOSER in the following sources:
(Please pick a composer who lived before 1900)
-Slonimsky, ed.- Bakers Biographical Dictionary of Musicians
-Thompson- The International Cyclopedia of Music and Musicians
-Michel- Encyclopé die de la musique
-Ewen- Composers of Yesterday

Compare these sources in the same manner as the term was examined
