TTh 1-1:50pm, Music Room 220

1. OFFICE HOURS: TBA
Office Phone: 963-1242

Web Page: http://www.cwu.edu/~liporid

Also whenever my office door is open, feel free to come in if you have any questions or problems concerning this course.

2. COURSE DESCRIPTION AND GOALS:

Music 252D is an introduction to the oboe and bassoon in terms of basic teaching techniques and minor proficiency.

Class time will be spent learning the basic fundamentals of each instrument and how to relate these teachings to public school education.

A student earning a passing grade of C or better in this class will be able to:
1. play the oboe and bassoon at a beginning student level. For example, play a two octave C scale for the oboe and a 2 octave F scale for the bassoon as well as demonstrate proper embouchure, alternate fingerings, and pitch adjustment for each instrument.
2. start a beginning student on the oboe or bassoon and be able to demonstrate basic techniques of each instrument to the student.
3. notice/fix problems of oboe and bassoon students through the high school level both within an ensemble rehearsal as well as in an individual lesson.
4. demonstrate knowledge of standard teaching materials and accessories (i.e. reeds, neck and seat straps, repair tools, etc.) for the oboe and bassoon.

3. TEXTS AND OTHER MATERIALS:

a. Required Text:

Dietz, William, ed. Teaching Woodwinds. A Method and Resource Handbook for Music Educators. New York: Schirmer, 1997.

b. Other Necessary Items:

Reeds! You must have at least one oboe and bassoon reed for this class. We will start playing oboe on the first day!

4. COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND GRADING:

a. Evaluation:

a. Oboe Oral/Demonstration Exam 25 %
b. Bassoon Oral/Demonstration Exam 25 %
c. Written Final (Both Instruments) 50 %

Oral exams will not be during class time but in my office for approximately 15 minutes. Sign up sheets will be posted prior to each exam.

b. Grading:

90% and above = A, A-
80% - 90% = B+, B, B-
70% - 79% + C+, C, C-
60% - 69% = D+, D, D-
59% and below = F

c. Absences:

Since this class is essentially a group lesson, the class can not move forward unless all students are at the same level.
For each unexcused day absent, your grade WILL be lowered a half a letter grade. If you miss a class, you will learn the covered in class on your own, or come to me BEFORE the next class to go over the material. The class will NOT wait for you to catch up.

I will request that you sign the form stating that you understand these attendance guidelines.

Verbal Changes to assignments, due dates, etc. given in class will always take precedence over what is written in the syllabus.

d. Late Assignments:

Personally, I feel that there is no good reason for turning an assignment in after the scheduled due date, other then your death. But, if something else should come up, here are my policies. An assignment is considered late if it is turned in after 12pm for a morning class or after 5pm for an afternoon class the day the assignment is due. Assignments will be lowered one letter grade for each class day late. A weekend will count for at least two days late. No assignments will be accepted after the scheduled final exam for the class.
