COURSE DESCRIPTION AND GOALS: Applied bassoon is intended to provide the college-level bassoon player with the necessary instruction to continue to improve his/her performance abilities. The objectives for the quarter are: 3. TEXTS AND OTHER MATERIALS: a. Required Materials: Students are required to provide all lesson materials, including solos, etudes, orchestral excerpts and scale studies. These materials can be obtained from most music stores and music libraries. A good source for ordering music is Trevco Music at http://www.trevcomusic.com. Students who do not obtain the required materials after a reasonable amount of time will receive a lower quarter grade. 4. APPLIED LESSON AND STUDIO CLASS SCHEDULE, AND ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS: Lessons will be scheduled at the beginning of each quarter. Studio class will be held on alternate Thursdays from 2-2:50pm or at another arranged time in Room 222. PLEASE NOTE: Studio classes are mandatory. A student must notify me at least 24 hours in advance if he/she cannot attend a scheduled lesson. Contacting me in person, by email, liporid@cwu.edu, or by phone, (509) 963-1242, are the only acceptable ways of notifying me. A make-up lesson time will be arranged if a regular lesson is missed. If the student misses a make-up, the lesson will be forfeited. It is the student’s responsibility to arrange for a make-up lesson. Each student will be allowed a maximum of two excused absences per quarter including studio classes. Each absence after this will result in a lowering of one letter grade per class missed. Unexcused absences from these classes will result in a lowering of one grade per class missed. In addition, the student is expected to attend the recitals or performances presented by members of the bassoon studio. Missing a required recital is considered an unexcused absence and the lesson grade for the quarter may be lowered. 5. STUDIO JURIES: In addition to the end of the quarter departmental juries, each student will perform a studio jury. This jury will take place during the final lesson of the quarter. The requirements are as follows: Music 164 Level: Music 264 Level: Music 364 Level: 464 Level: 6. Performance majors must perform on two convocations each year. This may also be an ensemble performance. It is the responsibility of the student to obtain the date of the convocation performance. All students in their third or fourth year of study must give a studio class presentation pertaining to their major. The topic of presentation must be approved by the instructor. 7. DEPARTMENTAL JURIES: All students are required to present a jury at the end of each quarter for the woodwind area faculty. The repertoire performed will be determined by the teacher and student.
