Geography of the Pacific Northwest

Map Exercise 3

Assignment due December 4

County Atlas

Each team will complete the construction of an atlas of a particular county which should include many of the topics
covered by the Atlas of the Pacific Northwest.  You will be able, of course, to provide much greater detail since
you will be mapping a single county.  You may model your maps after those found in your atlas or any other atlas
where particular data is presented cartographically in an understandable and attractive manner.  You are not required
to use colors; monochrome shading or patterns may be sufficient.

Here is an excellent example of an atlas of a county in the Pacific Northwest: Lane County, Oregon

At a minimum, you should construct maps concerning the following:

  • Geomorphology or physiography
  • Climate
  • Vegetation
  • Hydrology / Water Resources
  • Cultural-Historical Geography
  • Population
  • Transportation
  • Land Use / Land Cover

  • The atlas should be in 8.5" x 11" format.  A simple staple in the upper-left corner will suffice as a binder.
At the very least each map should have an explanatory caption.  But feel free to include short passages of text
if you wish.  Each caption should end with (Data source: citation), and a list of cited references should appear
at the end of the atlas.  Each atlas will be graded on completeness, accuracy of data, creativity, and imagination,
and each member of the team will receive the same baseline grade for the county atlas that you worked on,
with additional plus or minus points derived from a peer review process.

You are encouraged to use the vast cartographic resources stored at the map library, augmented by
library book and journal article research, local (county-level) data sources, and any accurate and
trustworthy resources posted on the internet.
