My Teaching Philosophy

My philosophy of teaching and student learning interwine.  I believe every child will have different needs in their ability to learn.  Students are our future.  I will take the time and instill positive experiences towards school to enable them to have positive experiences in their lives and future careers.
I believe that positive learning and attitudes will help a student achieve sucess in life.

My learning goals for my students are to be able to develop core concepts and principles from all content areas, mathematics, science, arts, social studies, reading, writing, and life skills they will need throughout their lives.  Their development as learners should help them become responisible members of our community and citizens of the United States.  I will strive to help my students develop problem solving skills which will allow them to use critical thinking in their everyday life.

I will continually raise the level of achievement for my students.  I will have positive expectations for all students to achieve success in class.  I will be willing to develop a professional relationship between students, parents, and fellow colleagues.

I will expect and show a positive attitude. I am one who is enthusiastic and committed to my students.  I believe firmly that attitude has a strong correlation to success.

I will set an example for success by dressing the part.  I believe Harry Wong is correct in saying "You  do not get a second chance to make a first impression."  An effective teacher dresses appropriately to model success.

My philosphy of discipline has been influenced by many classroom management theoriest, but is really quite simple.  I will make known to all my students the class rules, procedures, my expectations for the clas and their behaviors.  All students should be and will be treated equally and rules will be enforced.

According to Lee and Marlene Canter, "The most effective teachers are those who remain in control of the class while always remembering that their main duty is to help students learn and behave responibly."  I will manage my classroom smoothly so all my attention can be focused on the teaching of my students.  Giving them my full attention will enable our class to achieve great success.

I want my students to feel a sense of belonging to the class.  I believe in teaching students self-control to make reasonable decisions.  Haim Ginott contributed that "Teachers should communicate positively with students while reducing and correcting misbehavior."

Students have five prime needs; survival, belonging,  power, fun, and freedom.  I will work hard towards creating a classroom environment that is enjoyable, warm, safe, and supportive.  According to William Glasser, "For students to learn properly in school, they must believe that they do some work, they will be able to satisfy their needs enough so that it makes sense to keep working."

I believe in Wong's beliefs that the main problem in teaching is not poor discipline, but poor classroom management.  I will work hard to create a positive foundation that will lead my students to high achievement.  I will continually educate myself to become a more capable teacher, which according to Wong will allow my students to become more successfull.

I will create a learning community so my students can feel cared about and are encouraged to care about others.  Alfie Kohn encorages teachers to move toward a greater sense of community by building realtionships between teachers and students and becoming involved in class activities.  One way of allowing my students to become involved with class activities and building relationships is every Monday having a "Weekend Tell-All," giving the students a chance to tell the class about their weekend.

I will work hard to create a positive foundation that will lead my students to high achievement.  I will continually educate myself to become a more capable teacher, which according to Harry Wong will allow my students to become more successful in life.
