Volleyball: Attacking as a team

Lesson Plan #12

1. Objectives (Specific, Behavioral, Assessable)

A. Student:

1. By the end of the lesson the student will be able to demonstrate attacking as a team using the correct cues.

a.Call ball ìgoodî or ìoutî - As the ball is coming over the net on the serve or hit, a non-passer needs to yell either ìgoodî or ìoutî to let team members know if the ball is going to be played or not.

b.ìSupportî ñ All players on the team are opening up and readying themselves for the pass to either come to them or chase after if need be.

B. Teacher:

1. The teacher will establish protocol and maintain a safe environment for the students.

2.Instant Activity:

ì3v3î ñ Teams assemble in their assigned groups and play two 2-minute games while only using the skills they have learned in the previous lessons.Rotate twice so a total of three games are played.

3.Set Induction:

Yesterday we practiced defending your side of the court. What were some of the cues we covered to help defend?(Give the students a moment to answer) Thatís right, ìopen upî, ìtransitionî, and ìfreeî.Today we want to add a few more cues to help defend, but this time off of a serve rather than a free ball. This is a little more difficult. So, we are going to be focusing on the serve receive. When I say go I would like you to get back into your teams.I will know you are ready for further instruction when you are sitting quietly and looking at me.

·Calling out ìgoodî or ìoutî

·Opening up and ìsupportingî

MAF/Instructional technique
Extensions
Refinements
Applications
·Five volleyball courts will be set up using either actual volleyball equipment of badminton equipment.
·There are four hoops around the gym containing a mix of rubber volleyballs or regular volleyballs.

·Students are still in their groups of three that were previously determined.

·Students are gathered around the teacher awaiting instruction.

Game: 3v3
·Game is initiated with a free ball.
·A teamís turn to serve rotates after every free ball.

·The players rotate positions with each possession of the ball.

·Use up to three hits on each side, at least two will earn a point.

·Players are arranged as passer, setter, and hitter.

·Have two teams demonstrate.

Questions:
·Q: What do players do to serve receive as a team?

·A: Organize, play a position, set up in formation.

·Q: How do you serve receive as a team?

·A: Communicate, support

·The students gather around the teacher in a semi-circle after the game for questions.
Practice: When I say go, I would like you to go back to the courts you were just at.There will be two teams at one court, so I would like for each team to use only half the court. There should be one person from each team on one side of the net and the other two players will be on the other side of the net.The player who is by him or herself is the server. They serve the ball over the net to the person on their team who is designated the passer. The passer then forearm passes the ball to the setter who is simply going to catch the ball above their head. Then the ball should be returned to the server. Each player has six trials at each position before rotating.
·Have one team demonstrate this task.
·Set up of court is on the diagram provided at end of lesson.
·Now I would like the server to serve the ball at different levels so the passer has to use a different forearm pass.
·This time, I want the server to serve to different areas of the court so the passer has to move.

·Next, I would like the setter to move so the passer has different target to aim their pass at.

·The non-passer needs to remember to inform their teammates if the ball is either ìgoodî or ìoutî.
·Once the non-passer has called out if the ball is going to be played or not, the team needs to open up and support .
·See how many times the passer can successfully get the ball passed to the setter at a high level.
·Try to get the ball within one step of the setter.
·Bring students back into the semi-circle around the teacher for questions.
Questions:
·Q: Once the ball has been served and the passer is getting ready to receive the serve, what does the non-passer need to do?

·A: Inform the team if the ball is playable or not by yelling out ìgoodî or ìoutî.

·Q: Once the ball is determined that it can be played, what does the receiving team need to do?

·A: Open up and support; Be ready to either set or in position to hit.

Game: 3v3
·Same as initial game.Use forearm pass as first pass.
·Non-passer opens up and supports.

·To earn points, the non-passer also says ìgoodî or ìoutî as the ball comes over the net.
