2.Students will use all these cues while executing the defense.

a.ìFlat platformî= while using the forearm pass your arms should create a flat surface to strike the ball.

b.ìAthletic stanceî= knees bent dominant foot slightly ahead of the other arms hanging in front of you.

c.ìAbsorb and extendî= if the ball is coming a high speed you must absorb the ball by giving with your arms.If the ball is coming at a slower speed you must extend with your arms so the ball will get to your teammate.

d.Hand firm and open

e.Hit top of ball

B.Teacher:

1.The teacher will establish protocol and maintain a safe environment for the students.

2. Instant Activity:

3. Set Induction:

Today we are going to learn something a little new, the last couple of days we have learned how to attack. Today we are going to practice a little defensive strategy. We are going to play a game first but before we do I want you to get in to groups of three, by the count of three. Now I want you to picture a team getting ready to receive the ball, weather itís a hit or a free ball, I want you to picture what every position is doing. (Wait about 3 seconds) Now in your groups discuss what everyone should be doing. I want everyone to talk about one position.

4. Content Developmentósee page 3

5. Closure/Assessment:

·Regarding the activities we did today, I want you to think what are a couple of cues we used to do a forearm pass. (Wait 3 seconds and call on someone)

·Now I want you think of a couple of cues we used to do a set pass. (Wait 3 seconds and call on someone)

·Now think of some cues for a spike. (Wait 3 seconds and call on someone)

·I want you to picture a free ball coming over the net; I want you to picture the receiving team getting ready to set up for the attack. (Wait 3 seconds) Now I want you to tell the person next to you, what that would look like. (Walk around and listen to them)

·What does the setter do when getting ready to receive a ball?

·What does the hitter do when getting ready to receive a ball?

·What does the passer do when getting ready to receive a ball?

Applications

·5 volleyball courts will be set up.Use badminton courts if volleyball courts are not available.

·15 volleyballs and 15 rubber volleyballs are spread out equally in the 4 hoops in each corner of the gym.

·Students are divided up in groups of 3 ahead of time. Each group will have at least one student who has volleyball experience.

·The students are gathered around the teacher in a semi-circle.

Game:3v3
·Have a group of 3 demonstrate the game.Total of up to 3 hits each side.Start the game with a playable toss from the opposite of the net (free ball). The students are trying to set up defense positions and get the setter open up. Two hits earns a point. The groups are spread out 3 students on each side of the net.

·Refer to the diagram.

Questions:

§Q: What do you do when a free ball comes over the net?

§A: Move to play the ball in your area.

§Q: What does the setter do?

§A: Opens up

§Q: What does the hitter do?

§A: Transition off net.

§Q. What does the passer do?

§A. Split the court, balance the court, play in the middle of the court.

§The students are gathered around the teacher in a semi-circle.

Practice:When I say go I want your group of 3 to go to your assigned court.I want you to number yourselves 1, 2, and 3.I want person #1 to be the setter (right side of the net), person #2 to be the tosser (back of the court behind the setter), and person #3 to be the hitter.(Next to the net, opposite of the setter). A second team will be retrieving the balls. I want one person from the retrieving team to toss the ball high over the net to the back row. While the ball is in the air or before, the team should get ready to receive the ball. The passer in the back row will then pass the ball to the setter who will set the ball to the hitter, who will then attempt to hit or spike the ball, I want there to be 3 balls with every group, so you should go three times then rotate, everyone gets a chance at every position. After everyone has rotated on one team, the other team will get to go.
§Make sure a group of 3 demonstrates the task for the class.

§The groups are spread out 3 students on each side of the net.

§Refer to the diagram.

§I want the tosser to toss the ball underhand; right to the setter so they donít have to move.

§I want the tosser to toss the ball at different levels and directions so the passer has to move to get to the ball.Toss high, low, and to the side.

§I want the passers to be in an athletic stance with their knees bent, use a flat platform and use the absorb and extend technique.

§Setter should remember to have quick feet, and use the tips of their fingers

§The hitter should contact the ball with an open firm hand and Hit top of ball

§Passers try to pass the ball within one step of the setter.

§Setters try to vary the height of the ball to throw off the defense.

§Hitter try to hit the ball, to where you think the defense wonít be.

§Bring the students in to a semi-circle around you.

Game:3v3
§This is the same 3v3 game that the lesson began with.

§After the game bring the students in to the semi-circle.
