Relinking the Chain
You are out on a nice long ride when your chain breaks. If you have a chain tool you can amaze your friends. Hereis what to do:
Equipment:
Chain tool,
extra link, and a rivet.
1.
Shift gears so the chain is on tha smallest chainring. This will reduce
the tension.
2. Inspect
the broken chain. You may need to remove the link and insert a replacement
link. However, you can ride with one less link.
3. Use the
chain tool and line the link rivet that needs to be removed. Twist until
the rivet is almost all the way out. Do not allow the rivet to drop alll
the way out. Keep it attached to use as the rivet for the new link. you
should now have a male and female link to use.
4. Place
the male end within the female end. Turn the handle until the pin makes
contact with the rivet used to connect the two. twist until the pin is
flush on both sides.
5. If the
rivet needs to be replaced, line up the replacement rivet with the old rivet,
twist until the old rivet falls out and the new rivet is flush on both sides.
