Holding the Stick
EXTENSIONS REFINEMENTS APPLICATONS
Hand placement on sticks for right handers. Left handers perform the same direction, only do them in reverse.

Look at the sticks that are out in front of you. When I give the signal run to each stick and hold it I the correct position.

This time, alternate holding position between right and left handed position

Right Handers

-Left (lower) hand, with palm facing down, goes on the end of the stick

-Right (upper) hand, with palm facing up, is placed about 12 inches form the left hand

-Both hands are in front of the hips or slightly outside them

-Beginners may grasp the stick with the right hand closer to the head of the stick for control purposes

-Fingers hold the stick firm but not tight

-Thumbs of both hands lie flat against the shaft of the stick

Left handers use the same directions, only in reverse.

Close our eyes, pick up a stick, and adjust it until you feel comfortable with the position you have chosen, with regard to the proper technique.

How often can your hand position match the prescribed quality characteristics of holding the stick?

Can you take the non-dominant hand position and hold the stick correctly? What are two of the cues for properly holding the stick?

Cradling
EXTENSIONS REFINEMENTS APPLICATIONS
Cradling the ball

-Right handed players

-Left handed players

Bring the head of the stick from shoulder to the other several times slowly

This time put a ball in the web and swing the stick from one shoulder to the other. Try switching to the opposite hand position. Which is more comfortable?

Now we will try to use these 3 types of cradle positions:

-Two hand front cradle

-Two hand upright cradle

-One hand cradle

-Keep the upper hand and wrist loose

-Keep a loose grip on the lower hand to allow movement of the stick

-Move both of the arms as well as the hands for control

-Swing the stick from one shoulder to the other

-Beginners can look at the ball when cradling to make sure it is under control

-Experienced players should have a "feel" for the ball

-Use your wrist to snap the head of the stick behind the ball.

Count the number of times you can cradle form one shoulder to the other in 15 seconds.

Now try to use your non-dominant grip to cradle the ball from one shoulder to the next, and see how successful you are at keeping control of the ball.

See if you can jog through a set of cones without dropping the ball while executing the cradling technique. Try to complete one run involving each of the 3 types.

Scooping
Extensions
Refinements
Applications
Using the balls set out in front of you, walk up to and scoop each ball one at a time.

This time, run up to the balls in front of you and scoop them from the ground and finish the scoop by cradling in place.

Form two lines. Line 1 will be the scoopers and line 2 will toss balls toward the scoopers. Line 1 will scoop the balls and flip them to line 2 and return to their line. We will then switch roles.

-Bend the knees and upper body into a semicrouch position

-For right handers, the right foot is forward, vs. for the left handers

-the left arm determines the angle of the scoop, which is a variable for each player, but 30 degrees is recommended

-Hold the end of the handle to the side of the body, rather than in front

-The head of the stick hits the ground 1-2 in. from the ball

-Keep your eyes on the ball until you have completed the scoop

with a shovel-like motion

-Scooping should take place with both hands on the stick

Can you scoop each ball without losing it and touching the ground?

How fast can you scoop and cradle all of the balls?

See how many scoops you can make until I say switch.

Throwing
Extensions
Refinements
Applications
Throw the ball against the wall with the stick and experience the movement.

Throw the ball at the target on the wall. Remember these cues:

-side to target

-stagger body weight

-transfer body weight

With a partner, practice throwing at a target while you are running. Switch places after 5 throws.

-Turn non-throwing shoulder toward target

Stagger the feet about shoulder width apart

-Upper hand is even with the shoulders and it also controls the stick

-Place lower hand about 6-8 in. form the body

-Hold the stick at a 45 degree angle with the head facing the throwing direction

-Draw body weight to the rear leg and then transfer it to the front leg smoothly

-Upper body turns from a side position to a facing the target position

-Upper hand draws back, follows through with a wrist snap action

-Lower arm is bent at the elbow

-Lower hand pulls down on the end of the handle.

-The stick will end up pointing at the target in a horizontal plane

Try to throw the ball against the wall with the stick and catch it without moving more than one step from your space.

How many times in a row can you hit the target?

Can you hit the target at least once while you are moving? How far away can you get?

Catching
Extensions
Refinements
Applications
With a partner, stand 10 feet from each other. One partner will toss the ball, the other will catch it using the stick.

Now try throwing the ball against a wall and catch it on the rebound.

With a partner, throw the ball against a wall and have the other partner catch it.

-Square upper body toward the flight path of the ball

-Keep feet shoulder with apart

-Place the stick slightly above the head as a target for a pass

-Make sure the pocket on the stick completely faces the ball

-Make the catch in front of the body with the stick reaching out for the ball

Cushion the ball into the pocket by bringing the head of the stick back toward the body using a quick but soft wrist action

See if you can catch three balls in a row

Now take two steps backward and see if you can catch two balls in a row

How far back can you make a successful throw?

See how many times you can catch the ball until I say switch.
