Developmental Analysis - Team Handball
* These skills are broken down in a way that would help teach them during a lesson.

Task #1 - Dribble


Cues:

- Head and eyes up
- Use pads of fingers
- "Soft" hands
- Slight bend of knees
- Protect ball with body or with other arm


Challenge:

* Dribble ball through course of cones and obstacles.


Task #2 - Chest Pass to Teammate (Overhand Throw)


Cues:

- Have eye contact with teammate
- Use chest area as target
- Extend arm back according to distance of target (further extension with greater distance of target)
- Follow through pointing toward target


Challenge:

* Complete
six successful passes with partner from progressive distances. How far can you get apart and still be successful?

Task #3 - Bounce Pass to Teammate (Overhand Throw)


Cues:

- Eye contact with teammate
- Use waist area as target
- Bounce ball 3/4 of the way to your target, so that the ball is coming up when it is received
- Follow through


Challenge:

* Same as in
Task #2.

Task #4 - Catching & Gathering


Cues:

- Eye contact with teammate
- Put out hands to give a good target
- Use "soft" hands to cushion the reception of the pass
- Secure the ball (ie. tuck away, protect, etc.)


Challenge:

* Catch while stationary
five times in a row successfully:
.... on the move.
.... on the move with a defender.


Task #5 - Screening


Cues:

- Try to surprise opponent (so that he/she is not aware the screen is coming)
- Jump stop like a tree in opponent's path
- Get as wide as possible with arms in. Seal off the opponent (roll with them)


Challenge:

* Groups of six and partners of two. Two students on offense (screening), two on defense (avoiding screens), two passing. How many times out of five, can your team successfully screen and receive a pass from either passer?


Task #6 - Shoot on Goal


Cues:

- Make sure there is an
unobstructed view of the goal (other than the goalie)
- Have weight back with arm fully extended
- Shoot to one of the four corners on the goal


Challenge:

* Shoot to targets of progressively smaller size. Must make two in a row before progressing. How many targets can you pass?


Task #7 - Man to Man Defense (1 vs. 1)


Cues:

- Stay low and wide with bent knees
- Be on toes of feet
- Step then slide feet
- Cut off penetration dribble
- Adjust your distance from your opponent according to their speed


Challenge:

* Partner up and work on staying with your partner without the ball, then with the ball. Rotate and repeat.


Task #8 - Team Defense


Cues:

- Communicate
- Be aware of your surrounding and anticipate movement
- "Help" a teammate who has been beat by their man with the ball
- Recover back to your own man


Challenge:

* 3 vs 2 or 4 vs 3. How many times can you stop the offense from getting to the 6 meter line? No shooting or contact. Offense must retreat when cut off.


Task #9 - Deflecting the Shot (Goal Keeping)


Cues:

- Be on toes of feet, ready to react
- Use arms and feet to deflect ball


Challenge:

* Can you deflect
three shots out of five? If yes, the shooter moves to a closer distance and drill is repeated.
