Class Overview & Introduction:

The purpose of this unit is to familiarize students with the world-wide sport of Team Handball. This unit will require the use of various skills that are used in other sports and that have been taught in the Physical Education courses taken prior to this one. Students will become familiar with the lay-out and rules of this game (that many Americans are unfamiliar with), and then get first hand experience playing the sport in a predominantly modified setting.

Team Handball is a sport that is often confused among the American public. Often times, people connect this sport with the American formed sport of "Handball", that was created in the YMCA's of America. Unlike Handball, where handraquets are used to strike a small rubber ball against a wall, TEAM HANDBALL consists of seven court players working together as a team to attack another team's goal and to protect their own. Goals are scored by throwing a ball (that is a bit smaller than a soccer ball) into a goal that resembles a hockey goal. The strategies behind Team Handball are similar to soccer and basketball. The court dimensions are also similar to those of a basketball floor. Although Team Handball is merely an up and coming sport in America, it is the second most popular sport in the world, and draws great international attention that Americans rarely see outside of the Olympic Games.

Rationale:

Team Handball requires the use of skills that students use in a variety of activity. These skills include frequent passing and catching, throwing of objects at targets, jumping and landing and balance. For this reason in addition to the fact that it is frequently unknown to students, makes it a very relevant and exciting unit for the students to experience. Students will be more familiar with sport of the world and more apt to support this sport at the conclusion of this unit.

Student Learning Objectives:

1. SWBAT demonstrate a basic level of proficiency in throwing balls at targets.
2. SWBAT demonstrate a basic level of proficiency in using proper footwork to play defense.
3. SWBAT actively participate in the games of Team Handball.
4. SWBAT complete an activity that supports the growth of this sport in the United States upon completion of the unit.
5. SWBAT demonstrate the proper progression of skills required in a normal offensive possession.
