Team Handball Lesson #9
Topic: Goal Keeping / Shots on Goal

Concept:
Focusing on the scoring and stopping of scoring aspect of the game. Goalies and defenders learn how to stop a shot and protect the goal, while offensive players learn how to attack and where to place the ball when shooting on the goalie.

Skill:
Throwing / Catching, Footwork

Objective:
Students will be able to execute proper body positioning when goalkeeping and strategic placement of shots when shooting.

Goal Keeping Cues:
Wide base, bent knees, hands out, on balls of feet.

Lesson Activity / Drills:

-
Shifting -- Six players line up in the basic team hnadball offensive positions. Each player has a ball. Have players shoot the balls one at a time from left to right. The goalie works on shifting to get into blocking position.

-
One on One -- Goalie stands in goal. A player has several balls and tosses them quickly to different corners of goal. The goalie tries to block the ball and returns to ready position.

- Two on Two --
Two offensive players take positions in front of the goalie at the 6 meter line and alternate shooting high and low shots one at a time while the goalie attempts to block shots. Alternate goalies when necessary.

-
Transition Pass -- Players line up in basic offensive and defensive formations. Gave an offensive player shoot the ball at the goalie. The goalie will retrieve the ball and pass to his/her wing players as they are running towards the opposite goal. The wing player gains control of the ball and dribbles to the goal and shoots. A second goalie may be in the goal at the other end.
Modification:
Repeat the drill with wings breaking at the same time and making a designated number of passes before shooting. Repeat the drill adding defense at the mid-court area.

-
Reaction Time Drill -- Divide the class into groups of three. Each group of three should have two balls. Player A passes the ball to player C, who is the designated goalie. Player C quickly returns the ball to player A. Player C quickly turns to receive a pass from player B, player C then quickly returns the ball to player B. Repeat.

Games:

Goalie-Ball-
Line up in basic handball offensive and defensive positions. Players shoot at the goal one at a time. The goalie attempts to block the incoming shots. Every blocked shot equals one point for the goalie. Every successful goal equals one point for the shooter. Play three rounds. The player with the most points is the winner.
Modification-
The amount of rounds played is optional. If there is a trend of one side scoring more points than the other, make points worth less to balance scoring.

Diagnostic Assessment:
Where do the players shoot to on the goal in the first activity (Shifting)? How does the goalie go about blocking the ball?

Formative Assessment:
Are the attackers and goalie acting upon guesses? Make sure shooters throw to high percentage areas and the goalie is deflecting the shot with extremities.

Summative Assessment:
Can partners of four demonstrate proper shooting and goalkeeping form to the class as a skit with a mock scenario?
