Team Handball Lesson #1
* This lesson can be primarily conducted in a regular classroom if you wish.

Topic:
Introduction to the world-wide sport of Team Handball.

Concept:
Distinguishing the sport from the American played, YMCA based sport of Handball (small black rubber ball struck against a wall with hand raquets).

Skill:
Knowledge of the skills needed and used during proper execution of the sport.

Objective:
Students will be able to identify the skills needed when playing Team Handball.

Lesson Activity:
Provide students with a brief introduction to Team Handball. Explain how many people in the United States recognize Handball as the sport played with hand raquets and a rubber ball on a raquetball court. Emphasize the "TEAM" in Team Handball in comparison to the American version of Handball.

Identify the specific skills from various sports that Team Handball draws from (identify sports that students are familiar with... ie. Soccer, Basketball, Baseball).

Explain the use of these sports in Team Handball:

Soccer-
Goalie play, Man to man defense.
Basketball-
Screening, Passing, Offensive design, Man to man defense,
Dribbling.

Baseball-
Throwing to a desired target/area, Eye-hand coordination.

* Use students whenever possible to provide examples of these to class.

Options for this Lesson:

* Get a professional or club Team Handball player to come speak to the class.
* Show a video of a Team Handball game. Olympic footage is usually good (available from the
USOC). Stop or pause video to highlight something you have already spoke on to illustrate your prior point. (Remember the study on %'s of what students remember??? Students remember ...% of what they HEAR, ...% of what they HEAR & SEE, ...% of what they DO, etc, etc...).
* Explain dimensions of the Team Handball court (in the gym if you want), introduce the ball, show students the "stick em" that players use for gripping of the ball during play (
VERY COOL if you have access to it... NEED A GUEST SPEAKER!!!).
* Give an informal quiz showing different performance of skills in other sports and have students identify whether that skill would be used or not in Team Handball (written or oral).

Diagnostic Assessment:
How knowledgable are students about Team Handball prior to the lesson?

Formative Assessment:
Are students attentive and responsive to lesson activities?

Summative Assessment:
Can students answer and identify the skills used in Team Handball from examples of these skills being used in other sports?
