Lesson objective: Students
will be able to demonstrate the basic or utility delivery that will create
the framework that the students will build on throughout the entire bowling
unit.

ball high& swingside heel down on 'three'
ball low & sliding sole down on 'four'

Utility delivery drill:
*group management:
direct the students in a run-through
without balls. The students should set up side by side on adjacent
lanes. They should move together as a class to the foul line, executing
the utility delivery as proficiently as possible.
have them do a 'stop action' delivery
first. Point out the ball and foot positions as your students stand
frozen in each delivery position. Have them build up to a flowing
motion at game speed.
here are the proper ball and foot positions:
Count
Ball Position
Foot in front
1
Straight out in front of shoulder
Swingside (heel down)
2
Straight down
Balance side (heel down)
3
Straight out in back of shoulder
Swingside (heel down)
4 (slide)
Straight down
Balance side (toe down)
*instructions:
assume proper setup. Begin counting
cadence.
halfway between count 'four' and the
next 'one', push your ball forward with both hands, directly in line with
your bowling shoulder. At the same time, begin stepping forward with
your swingside foot so that both arms become straight and your swingside
heel touches down on count 'one'.
when both arms are straight out and
your swingside heel touches the floor, let your ball swing freely; keep
walkin, taking two more steps and a slide.
remember to match footwork to pendulum
swing, not the reverse
*goal:
20 utility deliveries
*decrease difficulty:
let student run through drill w/o ball,
then build game speed w/ball
have student stand beside either you
or an accomplished bowling partner and mirror coordination
*increase difficulty:
have student compare the feeling of
balance with a utility delivery taken from a setup both w/ and w/o a sufficient
amount of space (3 inches) between feet.
