Class Overview
The purpose of this unit is to introduce
students to backpacking in the outdoors. The students will be introduced
to backpacking through various lessons on survival in the outdoors, first
aid, how to pack a backpack, what to bring, what to eat and how to stay
safe when traveling in the outdoors. From these teachings students will
have the knowledge that is necessary to prepare and enjoy a trip into the
Great Outdoors.
Rationale
Backpacking combines physical and mental skills that the
students can use throughout their lifetime. The experience of backpacking
will allow students to live within the limits of personal ability related
to an activity and the environment, they will also find pleasure in accepting
the challenge and risk of stressful physical activity
Students Learning Objectives
1. Demonstrate how to pack a backpack (ie. distributing
equpiment evenly).
2. Identify the 13 essentials for backpacking.
3. Explain what type of food and amount is neccessary
for a backpacking trip.
4. Describe the appropriate clothing neccessary for backpacking.
5. Describe methods for purifying water.
6. Describe what equpiment is neccessary for a backpacking
trip.
7. Identify some conditioning activities to prepare for
a backpacking trip.
Essential Academic Learning Requirements
These activities are designed to meet the Essential Academic Learning Requirements in Health and Fitness and in Communication. After completing this unit, the student will:
For each lesson the students will be
assessed on a different aspects of backpacking. There will be an
assessment performed on students ability to fit a backpack, pack a backpack,
build a campfire, and hang a food bag. Students will be required to keep
a journal that will include class handouts, quizzes, individual backpacking
information, task cards, and photos from their backpacking experiences.
