1 semester. May be repeated once for elective credit
upon the approval of teacher and counselor.
Type:
Counts towards meeting partial graduation requirement
for Physical Education.
Recommendation for enrollment:
This course may be substituted for the requirement of
the fitness portion of the physical education graduation requirements.
Class meetings:
Class meets three times per week:
Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. We will ski at The Summit at Snoqualamie-West
every Wednesday. We will meet for the final period of the day and
class will be extended into the time that is scheduled for early release.
The bus will leave at 12:00 pm and return to the school at 6:30 pm.
Monday and Friday meetings will be during your regularly schedule class:
12:00-12:50.
Brief Description of the Course:
This course is designed to provide a program of physical
education with emphasis on both the fundamental skills and techniques of
alpine skiing in addition to understanding the fitness concepts, principles,
and applications associated with the activity. Students are involved
in activities that will improve their techniques and sport specific conditioning.
Confidence, good citizenship, and positive attitudes are emphasized.
Flexibility, agility, balance, power, strength, reaction time and endurance
are stressed.
Objectives:
By the end of the course you will
be expected to:
1. Improve your overall skill on the ski hill specific to your present skill level.
2. Improve you overall fitness in the following areas: flexibility, agility, balance, power, strength, reaction time, and endurance.
3. Understand the basic skills underlying alpine skiing.
4. Understand and demonstrate proper equipment care and use.
5. Understand what exercises are beneficial for cross training and building up skills necessary for skiing.
6. Have participated in a variety of cross training activities in addition to 8 days on the ski hill.
7. Remain Safe, Have Fun,
and Learn!
Course Content:
1. 8 days of skiing which
include lessons, individual work, and ski improvement time.
2. Class room discussions, lectures, presentations, and demonstrations relative to the critical components of alpine skiing.
3. Cross training activities such as ski-areobics, jump rope circuit, in-line skating, hills, plyomentrics, weight lifting circuits, and flexibility routines.
4. Personal assessment skiing and fitness components.

Safety
Skiing presents a potential for
many hazards if safety precautions are not taken. ALWAYS follow instructions
given to you and obey all rules. Stay within your ability while on
the ski hill and respect the mountain and the weather conditions.
Equipment must be used correctly and for the correct purposes at all times.
Please, report all injuries and illnesses to the instructor immediately!
