Lesson 4
Topic: Angle of release

Concept: mathematical part of the game in angles.

Skill: release at different angles.

Objective: Students will learn how to release the ball and what angle they may want to release it with.

Lesson activity: (materials needed: balls, hula hoops, poly spots, stackers)

Instant activity:  Hot Potato

In this activity we are going to talk about the different angles of release.  We first are going to let the students practice throwing the balls towards different targets.  All of them will be aiming about the same distance and at the same object.  Then we will switch to a different object.  Next we will come back and discuss how they were releasing the ball and where they were releasing it by their body.  I then will let them decide which angle they would all like to try and let them try a few to see which way really works best.

Next, I will talk to them about how you want different angles and you can do this by where you let the ball go in your release.  The sooner you release it from your hand, the lower and usually closer the ball will land and end up.  But the later in your release you let go, the higher or even farther it will go.  I will have them go and practice throwing lobs, rolling the ball and direct releases so that it goes straight in the air and releases the ball.  I will have them in pairs doing this to see who can get it closest to the area and have them help each other out.
