Physical Education Major

Today's physical education has undergone a radical transformation from practices of only a few years ago. Greater recognition is now directed at motivating children to become healthy adults who remain interested in pursuing an active lifestyle. To this end CWU's program is focused on preparing students with instructional skills in a wide range of health promoting activities. Our goal is to prepare individuals who are primarily interested in becoming effective teachers and will dedicate themselves to helping children of all ability levels to become competent, skillful, and motivated movers. We strive to instill in students the desire to help others experience the joy of movement and the fun of participating in movement activities. In addition to preparing as teachers of physical education, student in this program will complete a series of courses focused on health education. Graduates of this 78 credit major receive an endorsement in "Health and Fitness" which qualifies them to teach both physical education and health education in WA State public schools.

Health and Fitness Supporting Area

Students who choose to major in a field other than Physical Education or Health Education have the option to complete a minor in Health and Fitness. This option consists of a combination of selected classes offered by the Physical Education and Health Education Programs. Upon completing this 42 credit series of classes, graduates receive an endorsement in "Health and Fitness" which qualifies them to teach both physical education and health education in WA State public schools.

Coaching Minor

Students who are primarily interested in coaching can elect to major in an educational or non-educational field and complete a series of courses culminating in the award of a Coaching Minor. CWU's Coaching Minor meets the comprehensive Coaching Standards requried by the WIAA for individuals interested in becoming public school coaches.
