COACHING MINOR

PE 442 FIELD EXPERIENCE

Journal Writing Guidelines

General Instructions

Please remember:

1.    Your task is to learn from the experience not to critique or evaluate your coaching supervisor or other coaches.

2.    You are there to learn how you can become an effective coach, not to criticize others

3.    You must not take notes while coaching or assisting. However, you should write a journal entry as soon as conveniently possible after practice or a game.

4.    Supervising coaches are solely responsible for determining the responsibilities of each student.

5.    Students are expected to be available to assist coaches according to the agreed-upon schedule. Whenever possible, you should plan to arrive before practice and help with any set up. You should also try to stay after practice and assist.

6.    Regular attendance and participation in this experience is essential. Students should notify their supervising coach in advance regarding any planned absences. A failure to notify a supervising coach of an absence will result in an automatic failure for this course.

7.    Supervising coaches have the option to terminate the practicum if a student's performance is unacceptable.

8.     Students are expected to dress appropriately for coaching. You should try to present yourself in a way that will bring credit to you and to Central Washington University's Department of Physical Education.

Journal Format

Please read the following guidelines carefully and observe the required format:

  1. Journals are to be typed
  2. Journals should have a cover page with your name, date, and a title of the experience
  3. Journals are to be neatly presented in some type of presentation folder.
  4. Journals will be returned upon request.
  5. Journal entries should focus on what you are LEARNING rather than on what is happening. In other words donıt spend time explaining the drills, but rather focus on the instructional experience. Thinks about topics such as management and organization, behavior, communication, feedback, coaching philosophy, motivation, discipline, etc.
  6. Journal entries should be a reasonable length. ³Reasonable² means a paragraph or two at the least! (Half a page).
  7. At the end of the experience you are to write a reflection of the experience summarizing what you learned. This summary should be approximately 250 words in length.
  8. Journals that do NOT meet the above expectations will not be graded and you will fail this field experience.
