Developing the Problem and Using the Literature
Student Learning Outcomes
Students will be able to:
- Describe appropriate approaches to finding research problems.
(advisor, areas of controversy, faculty and grad. students, reviews,
personal interest)
- Describe the five criteria for choosing a problem (workability,
critical mass, interest, theoretical value, practical value)
- Identify differences between, and examples of, inductive and
deductive kinds of reasoning (specific to general versus general
to specific)
- Describe strategies for searching the literature (review papers,
use advisor, computer searches, etc.)
- Distinguish essential information when taking notes from literature.
(problem, subjects, instruments/tests, testing procedures, variables,
treatments, design and analysis, findings, questions, citations
and references)
- Describe how to take notes using index cards and computers.
- Describe the process of writing using the computer. (jigsaw
analogy, outlining, writing techniques, and how to review and
edit)
