Research Methods
Measuring Research Variables
Student Learning Outcomes
Students will be able to:
- Distinguish between examples of the four basic types of measurement
validity (Logical, content, criterion, and construct.)
- Distinguish between reliability and validity (Accuracy of
the measurement versus the repeatability.)
- Identify examples of data that are typically found on nominal,
ordinal, interval, and ratio scales and which types of data are
used in parametric and non-parametric statistics (names, rank
orders, etc.)
- Identify examples of data that are typically found on Likert,
Semantic Differential, Thurstone, and Rating scales (Likert =
agreement, Semantic Differential = bipolar adjectives, etc.)
- Understand two ways in which it is possible to objectively
assess the validity of measurements of knowledge (Item difficulty
and item discrimination.)
