Measuring Research Variables

Student Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to:

  1. Distinguish between examples of the four basic types of measurement validity (Logical, content, criterion, and construct.)
  2. Distinguish between reliability and validity (Accuracy of the measurement versus the repeatability.)
  3. Identify examples of data that are typically found on nominal, ordinal, interval, and ratio scales and which types of data are used in parametric and non-parametric statistics (names, rank orders, etc.)
  4. Identify examples of data that are typically found on Likert, Semantic Differential, Thurstone, and Rating scales (Likert = agreement, Semantic Differential = bipolar adjectives, etc.)
  5. Understand two ways in which it is possible to objectively assess the validity of measurements of knowledge (Item difficulty and item discrimination.)
