Running a Scan
After installation, a balloon will appear in your system tray to let you know the program is connecting to the Internet and looking for updates. Once the updates have been downloaded, the quick scan will start.
Note: The quick scan will look in the most likely places for spyware. You may want to have Windows Defender do a full scan which will look everywhere.

To start a scan on your own,
- Click on Start, All Programs, Windows Defender.
- Click on the drop-down arrow next to Scan and select either Quick Scan (default if you had just clicked on the Scan menu) or Full Scan. See note above for the difference.

Scan Results - What Not To Delete
When completed, the results will display.

- Click on the Review items detected by scanning hyperlink.
NOTE: If it finds UltraVNC, RealVNC, or anything to do with Windows Security Center do NOT delete them.

The first two are tools that ITS technicians can use to troubleshoot your computer if it experiences problems and deleting the third one will cause Windows to not recognize that you have virus protection (all CWU tagged computers should have Norton Anti-virus installed).
If the scan does find one of the above mentioned items,
- Cllick on the drop-down arrow in the Action field and select Always allow.
- Click on the Apply Actions button.
The next time the scan runs, it will not pick up this item.
If it finds other items you know to be spyware,
- Click on the drop-down arrow in the Action field and select Remove.
If you have any doubt as to whether or not the item should be deleted, call the Help Desk at x2001.

Enable Real-time Protection
Windows Defender can be set up to continually monitor your system and alert you whenever it detects a potential spyware threat and you can Ignore, Quarantine (set aside to determine later whether or not it is spyware), or Remove right then and there.
- Scroll down to the bottom of the page and select the check box for Use real-time protection.
Tip: This screen is also where you can set up to have Windows Defender scan your computer on a regular basis and what type of scan to run.
