The CWU Tree - Where Are You?

Here at Central, we are all connected to the CWU network, or “Tree.”

CWU Network

Full Context Log In Name

Everyone with network access is given a full context log in name. This log in name generally starts with a period (.). It is not necessary to use this full context log in name when logging onto a campus computer but it is a good idea to know what it is for things like adding a network printer, host registering a new computer and a variety of other networking tasks. For the most part though, you will just need the first part of the name Username.

Campus Computing

Local Drives

You cannot save files to the local hard drive in any of the labs (Mac or PC); they are loaded with special software that prevents anything from being saved locally.

You can however use one of the peripheral drives such as a thumb drive, a CD drive or even a zip drive, if available (zip drives are not being used much anymore).

Once the drive has been activated by either plugging it in for thumb drives or by putting in a disk for CD drives, an icon will appear on the desktop that you can double-click on to access the drive.

The CD drive looks like this, for example: Mac CD icon

Local Applications

All CWU tagged Macs are loaded with the Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), and the Safari browser for accessing the internet.

Other specialized software may be loaded, depending on the lab setup.

Email access is generally done with the web client at:

https://gwweb.cwu.edu

Other programs can be through the menu Go, then Applications; check the Dock at the bottom as well for one-click access to the most commonly used programs.

Computing From Home

ResNet

About 90% of campus residence halls and apartments have free high-speed internet connections. Support for this is through the ResNet department. They can help out with issues relating to your computer's internet connection such as getting connected, removing and preventing viruses and spyware, and troubleshooting web browsers. Call 509-963-2200.

Dial-Up

If you don't live in campus housing but are a registered student at CWU, you can make use of the free dial-up connection. You just need a modem and to set your internet connection to dial into 963-8000. For more instructions in setting up this connection, go to:

http://www.resnet.cwu.edu/dial_up.php

The Wildcat Connection

You can access your network drives from home as long as you have Internet access. See above if you don't already have an Internet Service Provider. The Wildcat Connection also has many other useful services.

  • Go to the CWU Home page at: www.cwu.edu/
  • Click on the Wildcat Connection Wildcat Connection icon icon towards the bottom of the page.
  • Log in with your Wildcat username and password.
