Why Novell?

If you want to share files with PC users or need to back up your Mac, you'll want to log on to the Novell network using the NetWare Computer application.

From Barren to Fruitful

To log on to the Novell network,

  • Click on the “barren” tree on the right side of the menu.

Barren tree

  • Select Login from the list.

The NetWare for Mac window opens.

Netware login

You'll need to know your username and password for logging onto the Novell network. This is the same username and password you use to access GroupWise.

  • Type in your username and password in the boxes provided.
  • Make sure it says CWU_TREE in the Trees box.
  • Under context, either type your context in directly or click on the Contexts button to browse for yours.
  • Click on Login.

The barren tree becomes a fruitful tree.

Note: Your personal data drive should mount automatically on the desktop.

Browsing for Drives

Across the top are three buttons.

  • Click on the Browse button to look for the drives you wish to access.

Browse for drives

The Browse function in NetWare uses the column view to navigate.

  • Click on the World icon in the left pane to display its contents in the next pane to the right (which will be the CWU_Tree).
  • Click on the CWU_Tree in the next pane to display its contents in the next pane to the right and so on until you've reached the drives you want to access.

Mounting the Web Drive

Many at CWU have been given the responsibility of updating a department web page. In order to do this, one must access the Zeus drive (also known as the “I” drive among PC users) where all CWU web pages are stored.

To access the Web drive once you've logged onto Novell,

  • From the NetWare window, browse through until you've reached the Acad folder.
  • With the contents of the Acad folder displayed, scroll down until you see the zeus_www drive.

Browse for web drive

  • Click on the name to select it, then click on the Mount button.

The mounted drive appears as an icon on the desktop.

Mounting a Shared Drive

In addition to your own data drive, you also are likely to have access to a shared drive that your entire department has access to. This is a convenient way to share files within the department.

To access the shared drive from the Browse window in NetWare,

  • Navigate through until you locate the area you work in (i.e. Acad, Admin, etc)

Note: Although you'll also see specific department folders (i.e. HR, AMBE), stay with the upper level area folders.

The following screen shows how to navigate to the shared drive for someone working in ITS.

Mount shared drive

Once you've located the shared drive (designated with your server name then _ SHARED_ DATA)

  • Click on it to select it.
  • Click on the Mount button.

The mounted drive will appear as an icon on the desktop.

The Auto-Mount List

Once you've mounted a drive from NetWare, you don't have to keep going through the Browse feature every time you want to mount that drive again. You can even use the “Auto Mount” feature to automatically mount the drives you usually access when you log in to Novell.

To set up to automatically mount certain drives,

  • From the log in screen, select the Mount button at the top.

Auto mount list

Any drives you've previously mounted will appear in this list.

  • Place a check mark in the On/Off box to the left of the drive name.

The next time you log in, those drives will automatically appear mounted on your desktop.

Logging Off of Novell

When you are done and want to log off of the Novell network,

  • Click on the fruitful tree in the menu at the top right.
  • Select Log out from the list.

The NetWare window appears.

  • Click on the Log Out button.

The mounted drives disappear from the desktop and the fruitful tree becomes barren.

  • Close the Netware window.
