Instant Messaging on the Macintosh

GroupWise Messenger

Instant messaging is available for both Mac OSX and PC users.

With this feature, you can send instant messages, create a Contact List, allow and block others from seeing your availability, save conversations, and more.

Getting Started

The instructions for downloading the Messenger program are at http://www.cwu.edu/~its/download/messenger/index.html

As the instructions indicate, once the program is installed, an icon will appear on your desktop.

  • Double-click on the Messenger icon icon.

The first time you log on, you will be prompted to enter your username and password.

NOTE: The password you need to enter will be your Novell password, NOT your GroupWise password (unless you've made them the same).

Messenger window

If you've never used Messenger before, your Contact List will be blank.

Contact Status

Contacts that are online will appear in bold.

If a Contact hasn't used their computer for a few minutes, the word “Idle” will appear in parenthesis next to their name.

If you are on the phone or going to be away from your computer for awhile, you can set your own status accordingly.

  • Click on File, Status, and select from the list that appears

or make your own Custom Status

Custom status window

  • Click on the Add... button,
  • Give your new status a name
  • Type in an auto-reply message if you want Messenger to send a reply to anyone who sends you a message while you're away.
  • Click OK.
  • Click Close.

You can also use the drop-down arrow next to your name in the main messenger window to select a status from the list.

Set Your Preferences

If you want to change things like your default font size, how long Messenger waits before it considers your status to be “Away”, or block others from seeing your Online status, you need to customize your Preferences.

  • Click on Messenger, Preferences...

Preferences window

Change your font on the Messages tab.

Change how Messenger alerts (or doesn't alert) you when Contacts come on or go offline on the Alerts tab.

You can also block users from seeing your Online status or from sending you messages on the Privacy tab.

Add Contacts

Note: You cannot add non-GroupWise users to this list.

To add another GroupWise user to your Contact List,

  • Click on the Add a contact link in the bottom pane of the window.
  • In the Find window that displays, search for the user you want to add to your Contact List.
  • Click on the Add button.

Open a Conversation

To start a conversation with someone,

  • Double-click on their name in the Contact List window.

Conversation window

The title bar across the top will list whom you are talking to.

The top pane of the window will display the conversation as it progresses, listing each person's name by the text they type.

The bottom pane of the window displays the text you type before you send it on.

This text can be formatted using the buttons in the bottom pane.

Note: You can only start a conversation with someone that is Online. Offline users will appear in grey on your list.

Invite Others to the Conversation

You can carry on an instant message conversation with more than one person.

To invite someone else to the conversation,

  • Click on Actions, Invite Others to Join the Conversation.
  • You'll have the option of selecting someone from your Contact list or looking them up in the directory.

Group conversation window

Close And Save a conversation

You can save your instant message conversation as a text file, readable by any word processing program.
