Accessing computer services

• What public access for computing is available to students? Examples include computing labs, cyber cafés, residence-hall computers, and wireless access.
  
  Public computer access for students is readily available across CWU and the six University Centers. Students can take advantage of nearly 30 open computer labs with modern computers (Mac or PC), and modern wireless laptops are available for checkout from both the Brooks Library and the Student Union & Recreation Center. Admissions and Registrar Services have several computers for your online student services, located in Mitchell Hall. Wireless access for personally owned computers is available across the campus for anyone (student, faculty and staff) with a valid CWU network account. In addition, public kiosk style access is available in numerous locations in the SURC, the Library and in several other buildings across campus.

• Does the campus provide institutional email accounts for all students and use email as an official medium of communication?
  
  CWU provides each student with a University email address within the cwu.edu domain. These accounts are created upon application to CWU, and are retained for approximately one year after students leave the University. Email is used as an official form of communication on campus, and students are responsible for reading the information that is sent to their CWU email accounts. CWU does allow students to automatically forward email from their CWU account to their personal account, if they choose. View instructions HERE.

• Does the campus provide and support electronic space for personal student Web pages?
  
  CWU does provide a small amount of file space for student web pages. With the decreases in the cost of portable storage devices, and the desire for students to be mobile (on and off campus, and where WIFI connections exist or don't exist), CWU recommends USB drives and other portable devices for students to store their scholastic and personal files on.

• Is network bandwidth limited for peer-to-peer software, gaming, Web cams, or other programs requiring high levels of network services?
  
  In order to assure that adequate bandwidth is available for all students, faculty and staff at CWU, bandwidth limitations (packet shaping) is implemented for most high bandwidth applications. While peer-to-peer file sharing has many legitimate uses and is supported at CWU, illegal peer-to-peer file sharing of copyrighted material is prohibited. In addition to policies and educational programs, CWU limits illegal peer-to-peer file sharing via industry leading automated processes. • Is there a campus code of behavior about using computer resources?
  
  CWU has a Technology Appropriate Use Policy (AUP) that all students, faculty and staff must abide by. This policy can be accessed at http://www.cwu.edu/~terilee/aup.html. In addition, students living in the Residence Halls have an additional appropriate usage policy related to usage of the Residence Hall Network (RESNET). Connecting with others

• Is contact information for students, faculty, and staff readily accessible electronically?
  
  Absolutely! The CWU Intranet Sites (one specifically for students and one specifically for faculty and staff) have numerous resources available, including phone and email directories for students, faculty and staff. The Intranet Sites are also an excellent place to get the latest information about what's happening on campus, post announcements, post classified ads, share rides, find housing or a roommate, and much more. These sites are only available from on campus, or from off campus with an approved CWU network account.

• Does the campus make online communities available (for example, forums, bulletin boards, and so forth)?
  
  CWU has numerous online resources available for students, faculty and staff. The most popular of these for students is the Student Intranet where students have access to numerous resources available to them, can share information, post notices, use the online classified ads, find roommates, sell/buy/exchange textbooks, rideshare, and so much more. Access to the most common social networking sites & online forums are also available via the Student Intranet, which is only available from on-campus or from off campus with a valid CWU network account. Numerous other bulletin boards and forums are available on specific websites at CWU, as initiated by the organization or club responsible for that site.

    • Focus, a self-paced, online career guidance tool used to assist students in self-assesment related to interests and career exploration
