Creating a New Windows XP Dial Up Connection

Note: Make sure you have installed your modem prior to using this guide.

  1. Open your computer to the " Desk Top "
    Close all programs
    Click on the Start button

  2. Click Control Panel

  3. Click Network and Internet Connections

  4. Click the Network Connections icon
  5. click the Create a new connection icon

  6. Enter 509 for the area code and click "OK"
  7. Click "Edit" and rename "My Location" to "CWU". Click "OK" twice to save changes

  8. Click "Next" to continue.

  9. Put a dot by "Connect to the Internet" and click "Next" to continue

  10. Put a dot by "Set up my Internet connection manually..." ; Click "Next" to continue.

  11. Put a dot by "Connect using a dial up modem". Click "Next" to continue
  12. Type in "CWU" for the ISP Name (or any name you like). Click "Next" to continue.

  13. Type in 9638000 for the phone number. Click "Next" to continue.

  14. Type in your FULL CONTEXT user name. (You MUST have a valid NDS user account. You can go to any CWU Lab or CTS Rm. 128 in Bullion or Resnet support desk in the Old Boiler Plant to open your account or change your password. You must bring your student ID and your RegiPin number.
  15. Click "Next" to continue.

  16. Check the following screen and make sure the CWU connection parameters are as you want them. A shortcut icon will be added to your desktop if you leave the box checked

  17. Click "Finish" to continue.
  18. Check the "save password" box only if you understand the security issues of doing so.
  19. Click the Properties radio button. Verify that your modem and phone number information is correct.

  20. Select the Networking tab. Verify that "type of dial-up server" is PPP: Windows 95/98/NT4/2000, Internet.
  21. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Verify that the settings are the same as the following screenshot

  22. Click OK to continue.
  23. Type in your password.
  24. Click "Dial" to start your connection. You should receive a pop up message verifying a successful connection.

  25. Launch your Internet browser and go to the net!

  26. If you can dial in, but the system will not validate your name or password (almost always "Error 691"), either your password has expired or you have not set your account up yet.

    You MUST have a valid NDS user account. You can go to any CWU Lab, CSS Room 128 in Bouillon Hall or Resnet support desk in the Old Boiler Plant to open your account orchange your password. You must bring your student ID and your RegiPin number).
