Information Technology Services: Remote Access - Windows NT

If you have used your modem to connect to an Internet Service provider before, your system is probably set up already and you can go directly to creating a phonebook entry for CWU.

Windows NT Dial-Up Networking components

In order to use Windows NT Dial-Up Networking to connect to CWU (or most of Internet Service Providers), the following components must be installed:

  • Installing Dial-Up Adapter (Modem setup)
  • Dial-Up Networking
  • TCP/IP Protocol Setup (Domain information)

Installing Dial-Up adapter

To install Dial-Up Adapter, follow these steps:

  1. Click on the Windows NT Start button, select Settings and select Control Panel.
  2. Double-click on the Modems icon inside Control Panel folder.
  3. If your modem is listed then it is already installed and you can proceed to the next step. Otherwise, click on the Add button and the system will try to autodetect your modem. Follow any instructions given.

Installing Dial-up Networking

To install dial-up networking, follow these steps:

  1. Click on the Windows NT My Computer icon.
  2. Click on the Dial-up Networking icon.
  3. Click on the Install button. If the button is not available, then Dial-up networking is already installed, so proceed to the next step.
  4. Follow the instructions displayed on the screen.

Setting CWU Domain Information

To set CWU Domain information, follow these steps:

  1. Click on the Windows NT Start button, select Settings and select Control Panel.
  2. Double-click on the Network icon inside Control Panel folder.
  3. Click on Protocols tab and then on TCP/IP . Click on the Properties button.
  4. Click on the IP Address tab and select Obtain an IP Address from a DHCP Server
  5. Click on the OK button and click on the OK button again.
  6. In order for the installation/settings to take into effect, the computer may need be restarted. Click on the Yes button to restart the computer if prompted.

Creating and Setting up Dial-Up Networking Entry for CWU

To create and setup a Dial-Up Networking Entry for CWU, follow these steps:

  1. Click on the Start button, select Programs , select Accessories , and select Dial-Up Networking If the system says phone book empty, just hit the ok button. See the screen below.

  2. Click on New button. See the screen below.

  3. At the Entry name: input field, type in CWU .
  4. At the Phone number: input field, type in 9638000 .
  5. Click on the Server tab. See the screen below.

  6. For the Type of Dial-Up Server , select PPP: Windows NT, Windows NT 3.5, Internet option.
  7. Un-select NetBEUI , un-select IPX/SPX compatible and leave the TCP/IP selected.
  8. Click on the Script tab. See the screen below.

  9. Make sure None is checked.
  10. Click on the Security tab. See the screen below.

  11. Make sure only the Accept any authentication including clear text is set.
  12. Click on the OK button again to finish the process.
  13. When you are back at the main Dial-Up Networking window, click on Dial to try it out. After set up, you just click on Dial-Up Networking , select destination CWU and hit the Dial button to connect. See the screen below.

  14. Enter your full context name for login in User name: field including the leading period and then your password in the Password: field. Leave the Domain: blank. Check the Save password so you will not have enter it each time you dial.
