If you have used your modem to connect to an Internet Service provider before, your system is probably set up already and you can go directly to creating a Dial-up entry for CWU. In order to use Windows ME Dial-Up Networking to connect to CWU (or most Internet Service Providers), the following components must be installed:
- Dial-Up Networking
- Dial-Up Adapter (Modem)
- TCP/IP Protocols
To install dial-up networking, follow these steps:

Click on the
Windows ME
Start
button, select
Settings
and select
Control Panel.
If the Dial Up Networking icon is present, go to the next section. Otherwise, double-click on the
Add/Remove Programs
icon inside the
Control Panel
folder.

Click on the
Windows Setup
tab inside the
Add/Remove Programs Properties
window.
-
Double-click on the
Communications
in the list of
Components
-
If the
Dial-Up Networking
is checked, then it has already been install, proceed to the
Installing TCP/IP protocol
section. Otherwise, check (click on it) it, click on the
OK
button, and click on the
OK
button again.

Insert the appropriate disk (Windows CD-ROM) when prompted and click on the
OK
button.
-
When prompted to restart the system, do not restart the system yet. Instead click on the
No
button and move to the next section.
To install TCP/IP protocol, follow these steps:

Click on the
Windows ME
Start
button, select
Settings
and select
Control Panel.
If you don't see all the icons, select
"View All Control Panel Options".

Double-click on the
Network
icon inside
Control Panel
folder.
-
Click on the
Configuration
tab and look for
TCP/IP
in the list of network components.
-
If
TCP/IP
is found, proceed to the
Setting CWU Domain information
section. Otherwise, click on the
Add
button.
-
Select the
Protocol
network component and click on the
Add
button.
-
In the list of
Manufactures
, select
Microsoft
.
-
In the list of
Network Protocols
, select
TCP/IP
protocol, click on the
OK
button, and click on the
OK
button again.
-

To set CWU Domain information, follow these steps:

Click on the
Windows ME
Start
button, select
Settings
and select
Control Panel.

Double-click on the
Network
icon inside
Control Panel
folder.

Click on the
DNS Configuration
tab.

Select the
Disable DNS
option.
-
Click on the
OK
button and click on the
OK
button again.

In order for the installation/settings to take into effect, the computer must be restarted. Click on the
Yes
button to restart the computer when prompted.
To create and setup a Dial-Up Networking Entry for CWU, follow these steps:

Click on the
Start
button, select
Programs
, select
Accessories
, select
Communications,
and select
Dial-Up Networking
to see the screen below.

Double-click on
Make a New Connection
icon to see the screen below. (If this is your first dial up networking connection, the
Welcome to Dial Up Networking
screen will appear.

At the
Type a name for the computer you are dialing:
input field, type in
CWU
.

Click on the
Next
button for the screen below.
-
At the
Telephone number
input field, type in
9638000

-
Click on the
Next
button for the screen below.
-
Click on the
Finish
button.
-
Right-click on the
CWU
icon in the Dial-up Networking window and select
Properties
for the screen below.

Click on the
Networking
tab for the screen below.

-
For the
Type of Dial-Up Server
, select
PPP: Internet, Windows 2000/NT,
Windows ME
option.
-
Check to see that only
TCP/IP
and
Enable software compression
are selected.

Click on the
OK
button again to finish the process and to return to the main Dial-Up Networking window.

Double click on
CWU
icon under
Dial-Up Networking
to dial and see the screen below.
If you have existing Dial Up connections, continue to the next section.

Enter your full context name for login in
User name:
field
including the leading period
and then your password in the
Password:
field. Check the
Save password
so you will not have enter it each time you dial
(Only do this if you want others to be able to use your connection!).
Then click on the
Connect
button to dial. A successful connection will show "verifying user name and password" and then a
connection established
screen. Click the
close
button to remove this screen from the desktop.

If you do not connect successfully, check your username and password for correct syntax.

You can create a shortcut on the desktop by selecting your CWU connection icon (in the dial up networking window), right click, select
Create Shortcut
, and select
yes
to create desktop shortcut
If you have existing dial up connections, Windows will default to some of their settings for your new connection. To set up new dial properties for your CWU connection follow these steps:

Click the
Dial Properties
button. Click
New
to create dialing from:
New Location

-
Click OK for the new location created. Next, while "New Location" is highlighted, type CWU to change the name from "New Location" to "CWU".

Check the
Area Code Rules
to make sure no area code is dialed and check all other dialing properties to make sure they are correct for this connection.

Click
OK
to save your changes.

Enter your full context name for login in

Verify that the
Phone number:
and the
Dialing from:
entries are correct.

Click on the
Connect
button to dial.

close
button to remove this screen from the desktop.

If you do not connect successfully, check your username and password for correct syntax. You can create a shortcut on the desktop by selecting your CWU connection icon (in the dial up networking window), right click, select
Create Shortcut

to create desktop shortcut.
