New Student Information

Congratulations on your acceptance to Central Washing University! We are very excited to have you join our community. The following information will guide you through the processes of becoming a CWU student.

Orientation/ Discover!

Depending on your start term, Central Washington University provides a variety of fun orientation events to help you become familiar with CWU. Otherwise known as Discover!, this one day event offers campus tours, an introduction to campus services, academic advising, registration and more! Although Discover! take place at the main Ellensburg campus, students from all CWU campuses are welcome to attend.

To sign up for the next Discover! day, click here.

For students unable to attend a Discover! day, an alternative orientation event will take place a few days before classes begin.

Registration/Advising

All new students are required to meet with an Academic Advisor before registering for classes. All registration is performed on-line through the CWU “SAFARI” system. Your Academic Advisor will provide you with instructions on how to log-in and access the system.

To determine your Advisor, please contact the International Student Advisor, the Academic Advising Center or the appropriate CWU satellite campus.

Paying tuition/fees/housing

Payments for tuition, fees and housing are due by the seventh day of each quarter. A late payment fee of $50 will be charged to your CWU student account if payment is not made on time. Payments can be made on-line, in person at the Cashier’s Office in Barge Hall, or by telephone with a credit card at 509-963-2224.

Health insurance

Although health insurance is not required, we recommend that you purchase some form of health insurance. Health care and medications in the United States are VERY expensive. Having a good health insurance plan can help reduce the cost. Plans can be purchased privately, on-line or through CWU. Costs and coverage will vary, so we recommend shopping around before purchasing a plan.

We recommend that you take care of any medical issues before you leave home, including updating your vaccinations. CWU does have a fully staffed medical clinic for students, but not all services are free nor do they cover all aspects of medical care.

Quarter system/Vacations

Central Washington University runs on a quarter system. This means that there are four terms per calendar year that are 10 weeks each. The summer quarter is an optional term and is 6 to 8 weeks in length.

The terms generally run as follows, with vacation breaks in between:

Fall quarter: mid-September to early December

Winter quarter: early January to mid-March

Spring quarter: late March to early June

Summer quarter: mid-June to late July/mid-August

Official vacations are all days between quarters and the following:

Martin Luther King Jr. Day – mid-January

Presidents’ Day – mid-February

Memorial Day – late May

Independence Day – July 4th

Veterans’ Day – mid-November

Thanksgiving recess (2 days) – late-November

The summer quarter is considered a vacation quarter unless students choose to study during that term.
