Office of International Studies and Programs: The JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship Program for Recent Ph.D.'s

The JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship Program for Recent Ph.D.'s seeks to provide promising and highly qualified researchers in the social sciences and the humanities with the opportunity to conduct research with leading universities and other research institutions in Japan. The Social Science Research Council serves as the nominating authority for US-based applicants in the social sciences and humanities. Researchers in the field of medicine should contact the Fogarty International Center at The National Institutes of Health for further information. Researchers in the physical sciences should contact the National Science Foundation.

Although the competition has no topical boundaries, proposals that advance research in the following three areas will be particularly welcome:

  • Science and Technology Studies: Including but not limited to topics in: philosophy of science, history of science, science education, comparative research and development strategies, public/private cooperation in research; science and technology policies.
  • Economics, Business, and Trade Studies: Including but not limited to topics in: micro-economics, macro-economics, comparative economics, international economics, banking and finance, organizational behavior, industrial relations, human resource management, international trade law and policy.
  • Environmental Studies: Including but not limited to topics in: sustainable development, biodiversity, global climate change, comparative environmental policies, studies of the human dimension of environmental change.

Period of Fellowship: 12 to 24 months, to begin between January 1 and March 31.

Terms of Award:

Round-trip airfare; insurance coverage for accidents and illness; monthly stipend of 270,000 Yen; settling-in allowance of 200,000 Yen; monthly housing allowance of 100,000 Yen; monthly family allowance of 50,000 Yen; eligibility for up to an additional 1,500,000 Yen annually for research expenses.

Eligibility:

US citizens or permanent residents. A doctoral degree received after April 1, 1990 and prior to the effective date of the fellowship. Proof of an affiliation with an eligible host research institution in Japan.
