The Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia is one of the largest pedagogical institutions in Russia. Its history is inseparable from the history of St. Petersburg where, in 1770, under the initiative of I.I. Betskoy, a prominent statesman and educationalist, the Educational House was established within the walls of the present University. In 1928 it was officially called the Third Petrograd Higher Pedagogical Institute, and since 1930 it bears the name of A.I. Herzen, the famous Russian writer and public figure.
