Cast Metals : Internships |
|
Students may take part in internships during the summer months in which they work in foundries. Experiences vary, but learning many processes as time allows is valued. A typical schedule consists of two weeks in the pattern shop, two weeks in molding (first week sand testing and mulling of sand; the second week working with molding machine and doing some molding.) During the fifth week students may work in the melting department and in the metallurgy lab. Week six would be working with the furnaces and autopour area.Weeks seven and eight you would probably find yourself in the finishing department loading and unloading with the blast machine. The rest of the time would be spent cleaning and inspecting. The ninth week might be spent on the paint line, doing some machining, programming, or shipping. The final week might be spent in engineering looking at casting drawings, watching how they estimate the cost of a casting, or you might be involved with designing and building jigs and fixtures for a production run. We hope this gives you an overall picture of what an internship might be. Each company may vary in its time-table process for putting you through their internship. |
