Determine Qualifying Status for:

Holiday Pay Qualifying Status for Classified Employees Governed by Washington Administrative Code (WAC) 357

Non-represented employees (covered by WAC 357-31-010) must be in pay status for the entire work day preceding a holiday to qualify for holiday pay.

Classified Cyclic-Year Employees:

Special conditions apply for classified staff cyclic year employees when the holiday occurs in the same month as scheduled cyclic leave without pay.

  • Cyclic year position employees scheduled to work less than full monthly schedules throughout their work year qualify for holiday compensation if they work or are in pay status on their last regularly scheduled working day preceding the holiday(s) in that month.

If you have any questions concerning eligibility for holiday pay or the reporting of leave without pay for those individuals who do not meet the eligibility requirement, please call your area's Human Resource Representative.

Holiday Pay Qualifying Status for Classified Employees in Bargaining Unit 1 (WFSE)

Employees must be in pay status on the work day preceding the holiday to qualify for holiday pay.

Classified Cyclic-Year Employees:

Special conditions apply for classified staff cyclic year employees when the holiday occurs in the same month as scheduled cyclic leave without pay.

  • WFSE covered employees who work less than a full monthly schedule are entitled to the number of paid hours on a holiday in an amount proportionate to the time in pay status during the month to that required for full-time employment. (To calculate this: Divide the number of hours worked in the month by the number of work hours available (minus the holiday) and multiply by 8).

If you have any questions concerning eligibility for holiday pay or the reporting of leave without pay for those individuals who do not meet the eligibility requirement, please call your area's Human Resource Representative.

Holiday Pay Qualifying Status for Classified Employees Covered by Public School Employees (PSE) Contract

Employees must be in pay status on the work day preceding the holiday to qualify for holiday pay.

Classified Cyclic-Year Employees:

Special conditions apply for classified staff cyclic year employees when the holiday occurs in the same month as scheduled cyclic leave without pay.

  • Cyclic leave scheduled in 6 months or less of the year: Cyclic year position employees scheduled to work less than full monthly schedules throughout their work year qualify for holiday compensation if they work or are in pay status on their last regularly scheduled working day preceding the holiday(s) in that month.
  • Cyclic leave scheduled in 7 or more months of the year: PSE covered employees who work less than a full monthly schedule are entitled to the number of paid hours on a holiday in an amount proportionate to the time in pay status during the month to that required for full-time employment. (To calculate this: Divide the number of hours worked in the month by the number of work hours available (minus the holiday) and multiply by 8).

    Example:
In the month of December, a full-time cyclic employee worked 80 hours. There are 176 work hours available for a full-time employee in the month of December. (The Christmas holiday is not counted as hours available to work.) The calculation is (80/176) x 8 = 3.64. Therefore, the employee will receive 3.64 hours of holiday pay.

If you have any questions concerning eligibility for holiday pay or the reporting of leave without pay for those individuals who do not meet the eligibility requirement, please call your area's Human Resource Representative.

Holiday Pay Qualifying Status for Administrative Exempt Employees

All Administrative Exempt employees, cyclic or 12-month, must be in pay status for the entire work day preceding a holiday and within the employment period to qualify for holiday pay. (Section 6-6.1 of the Exempt Employees' Code)

If you have any questions concerning eligibility for holiday pay or the reporting of leave without pay for those individuals who do not meet the eligibility requirement, please call your area's Human Resource Representative.
