Introduction

Do you know the impact you can have on your family, your city, your country, and culture?  There have been people in history's past that have had significant influence on their culture. Since this is black history month, we are going to research some "moments"in black history that have changed society.

I'm sure some of you have heard about Martin Luther King and have heard his speech "I Have A Dream", and you recognize that this is a "Major Moment" in Black History. But how many of you have had Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwiches for lunch? Did you think about who first made peanut butter? And if this person had not made peanut butter, how different your lunch would have been? Not all significant moments in history have to be HUGE PUBLIC gestures. They can be as simple as smashing a peanut.

Task

1.  You will sign up for one black person in history that "did" or "said" something that changed the society that you live in today.
2.  You will create a poster using pictures, quotes, photos, and facts to describe your "moment" in black history.
3.  You will describe the "effect" the moment had on society.
4.  You will provide some biographical information (date of birth, name, where they live(d), family history, and other pertinent information.
5.  Include your opinion on the event and how it has influenced your life.

The Process

While creating your "moment" poster you are encouraged to use the following list of prompts to help you create your poster.

Resources

Students are required to use at least 3 credible and verifiable sites. One site from the following list is required. The other two sites may be verified with the instructor.

NAACP (www.naacp.com) - Site that compiles significant issues regarding Black Americans.

History (www.history.com/minisites/blackhistory) - Site with various links and detailed information on historical people, places, and events.

Kaboose (resources.kaboose.com/kidslinks/social-studies/black-history/Black_History.html) - Site for children to find interesting and new information and                                                                                                                                                                                                                 facts on various topics.

Franklin Institute (www.fi.edu/learn/hotlists/blackhistory.php) - Site for the Institute to provide information and research study results for varying topics.

Enchanted Learning (www.enchanted learning.com/history/us/aframer/) - Site for children to explore and learn in an exciting and interesting way.

Evaluation

Students will be assessed on the completeness of (professionalism and amount of information contained in) their posters.

Conclusion

At the conclusion of this project, students will have explored an entire culture, compared past and present cultures, and considered the effects of events upon societies. Students will see that Small Moments can be as important as Big Moments. Students will see that one person can affect an entire culture, showing that they can be just as important as a "famous" person.
