Phi Alpha Theta is a national honor society to which CWU's Department of History has belonged since 1972. Every spring, members of Central's Tau Iota chapter induct new undergraduates and graduate students with a grade point average of 3.1 and 3.5 respectively (see Membership Requirements). Last year, at the May 15, 2007 induction ceremony, eight students were initiated.

CWU's chapter of Phi Alpha Theta has sent the department's top students, both graduate and undergraduate, to annual Phi Alpha Theta regional conferences (see Phi Alpha Theta News). There, students sit on scholarly panels and present papers that are evaluated by faculty commentators from throughout the Northwest. In the past two years, the Phi Alpha Theta conferences have been held in Sun Valley, Idaho, and in Helena, Montana. This year the Northwest Regional conference will be held in Spokane, Washington. Members participate in the Northwest regional conference every March by presenting their original research in a formal setting. Central's winners include Louis Musso III (1993), Andrew Skeen (1993), Tracey Pepper (1998), and Jennifer Meyer (2003).
