Islam Unit: Founding, Formation, and Culture
1. Islamic Society Power Point Project
2. Purpose of Lesson:
The
unit the class is undergoing is a study on the formation and culture of
Islam. By this point in the class we have gone through the
founding and early years on Muslim society. Today’s lesson will
introduce the Power Point project, which the student will work on as we
continue through the Unit. This project will show the student knowledge
of a certain topic in Islam of their choice, help students develop skills in
power point, and finally help student learn how to present a certain
topic to an audience (the class). Today’s work will be about
setting the project up, selecting a topic, introducing them to the
systems used to produce the final project, and giving examples of
successful projects.
3. Instructional Materials Needed:
o Power Point Project Handout
o Power Point Slides
o White Board and Pen
o Computers, with Internet access.
o Books
4. Lesson Objective (Learning Targets)

o Teach student basic Power Point skills.
o Explain the purpose of the project.
o Help students choose a topic, which will be useful to their understanding of Islamic formation and culture.
o Show successful projects and explain what made them successful.

o Students will be able to navigate the Internet intelligently looking for primary and secondary sources.
o Students will be able to distinguish between a primary and secondary source.
o Students will be able to locate bibliography information.
o Students will be able to understand how to build a basic Power Point slide show.

o History Standard 2.1.1 – Explain how an idea has effect the way people live.

History Standard 2.1.3 – Compare and analyze major ideas in
different places, times, and culture, and how those ideas have brought
about community, change or conflict.

Students use critical thinking skills to plan and conduct research,
manage projects, solve problems, and make informed decisions using
appropriate digital tools and resources.
5. Class Instruction
Anticipatory
Set: I plan are starting off the class with a question on the
white board pertaining to the topic of the day. Today’s will be; as you
have explored the civilizations of Islam, what topics have interested
you the most and why. Put in order of Interest. These choices
will help the students and myself in choosing the topic that will be
the focus of the project.
Modeling (Show): This
instructional period will allow me to go through the various parts of
the handout which the students will pick up as they enter the class and
use as their model for the project.
-I will start of by explaining the overall purpose of the project.
-I then will explain how student will use technology, i.e. PowerPoint and the Internet to build their project.
-I will then show examples of successful PowerPoint’s to the students.
-Final
I will give them a brief example on what the presentation format will
be like. I will go over this section in more detail in a later class.
-Each section will have time built in for questions and quandaries.
Guided
Practice (Follow me): The student will now be able to access the
Internet and go through and discover different sites with me. I will
guide them through different websites that will make their searches
more efficient, and help them locate important bibliography information
needed for the final project.
Independent Practice: I will
let them go on their own searching Internet and playing with the
functions of PowerPoint. I will wonder the class, helping supervise
their searches, and helping them as the find the best sources for their
topics.
Checking for Understanding/Questions: As I go through
the class checking their project I will be asking them question the
push their understanding of both the sources they are working with and
the topic that they are focusing on.
Closure: I will make
sure that the students have proper logged of the computers before
leaving the room. I will also remind them to be thinking of inventive
ways for them to present their information in a more personal way.
Assessment Strategy:
o
The Handout will include a rubric for the final project, allowing
the students to know what is expected for certain grades.
o
I will always be asking question of my students so that I make
sure that they understand the project and technology that they are
working with and on.
