Introduction seattle1

Look around you at all of your fellow Washingtonians. Who are they and why are they here? Why are you and your family here? Who used to be here? Are they still here? People make up a big part of a state's history. Washington is very diverse demographically, let's find out more about why people were and are here in Washingon.

The essential question you are answering will be "Who's been/is in Washington state, why were/are they here and how have they helped shape our state's history?"

Begin this project by creating a 'KWL' chart for Washington State demographics then and now to help get yourself jumped started on this project.

Task washington

At the end of the project you will have created a poster-sized timeline, along with a brochure explaining the timeline. You may also choose another way of creating a visual aid, but it must be approved by the teacher.

You will also be turning in your notes and any drafts to me. (They will not be graded; it is just for my information.)

At the end of the project you must have at least one visual aid, and one form of explanation with the key points of the information you discovered. We will be having round robin presenations at the end of the designated time given to create your presentation.

The Process washington2

Here are some tips on how to get started and work through your project get to the final product:

-Create a 3 column chart for your discoveries of different groups of people in Washington at the different times.  Lable each row with "Who?", "When?", "Why?" to help organize your thoughts/notes.

- Look at (refer back to) your KWL chart and note what you are going to be focused on during your research.

- After your research find a way to organize your information chronologically, however it makes sense to you, or how your peers will best be able to comprehend the information you will present.

- Using your organized information, create a visual (timeline poster) and any brochure or written information to help students understand the visual and any other important information you will be sharing.

Resources washingtonapples

Here are several resources to help you along with your research process. You are free to use any other credible websites you please, but these should get you started. Please use at least 2 of these resources in your research process.

This website is put on by a national website: Native Americans.com. The site proides information specifically on tribes that exist within Washington State and their histories and traditions.

This website provides demographic information on the state of Washington. There are specific links and pages that give a break down for the most recent ages and races in the demographic of Washington State.

Washington State History
Here you can find a history of Washington State, specifically the immigration and history of immigrants in Washington State. Other information can be found about the state of Washington if you find it helpful for building your brochure or timeline.

Washington State Immigration
This is an article by the Seattle Times giving information and observation on the history of immigration in Washington State. This will give you a different perspective on immigration not just from a dot-com website.

Washington State Indians
Here is another website discussing the Native American tribes in Washington State. These tribes were the original inhabitants of Washington, so you should be able to find some useful information for your assignments here.

Evaluation

This is the rubric you will graded on. Even if you are working in a group, each student will be graded individually. You will be receiving an overall grade for all the assignmens combined, not individually. Use this as your referance while you are working.
